Lady Wolves defeats Baton Rouge; Wolves fall

WESSON – The first game back from a long holiday break saw the Copiah-Lincoln Wolves split a double header with the Baton Rouge Bears in Mullen Gymnasium on Monday night. The Lady Wolves, led by 19 points from freshman guard Claresa Banks, were 63-51 winners over the Lady Bears.

In the men’s game the Bears and Wolves battled in a close contest throughout before Baton Rouge pulled away for a 78-74 victory.

The Lady Wolves (6-4, 0-2) avenged an 80-66 loss at Baton Rouge on Nov. 11. Co-Lin was able to hold Lady Bears leading scorer Ashley Williams to seven points, 10 points below her season average.

Perhaps experiencing something of a post-holiday hangover, Co-Lin fell behind early, 9-0, as the Lady Bears controlled the first few minutes of action. An 11-point run would get Co-Lin back into the game and they held a 28-27 lead at halftime.

Sophomore guard Ashley Minor scored 16 for Co-Lin. Sophomore forward Jessica Wilson pulled down 10 rebounds for the Lady Wolves. Baton Rouge was led by Rosa Bryant with a game high 25 points.

Bears 56, Wolves 49 

The Wolves (3-7, 0-2) fell 56-49 at Baton Rouge in their last meeting on Nov. 11. Co-Lin placed three players in double figures. Sophomore guard Michael Vardaman led the way with 14 points. Anthony Davis chipped in 12 points and Chris Steverson added 10 points for Co-Lin.

The Wolves held a 32-28 lead at halftime. Baton Rouge was led was by a game high 24 points from Darryl Braggs.

Co-Lin returns to action on Thursday, when they make the long drive to Fulton to take on the Itawamba Indians. The women tip off at 5:30 p.m. with the men’s game to follow. Audio broadcast for both games will be streamed live at www.colinathletics.com and on WMJU 104.3 FM in Brookhaven.
