McCOMB – A Brookhaven woman died in an automobile accident and another man was injured after the pickup they were traveling in veered off the road and flipped over Friday night in Pike County.

Laken Michelle Bailey Kennedy, 26, of Brookhaven was dead at the scene of the single-vehicle accident, according to Pike County Sheriff Mark Shepherd. A male occupant in the vehicle was taken to Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in McComb after sustaining injuries in the accident, and was treated and released later Friday night, according to a hospital supervisor in the ER.

“The car drove off the road, hit several small trees and ended up flipping over,” said Shepherd. Kennedy was not wearing a seatbelt, Shepherd said, and was ejected from the vehicle.

The sheriff’s department is investigating the accident, but was unable to determine which of the two was the driver of the vehicle as of Saturday night.

The wreck occurred just north of Highway 98 East on Gibson Road. Shepherd said it was likely that speeding played a role in the accident.

The Pike County Sheriff’s Department received the call to the accident at approximately 10:30 Friday night. In addition to the sheriff’s department, the McComb Fire Department, AAA ambulance service and volunteer fire departments from the area responded to the call, said Shepherd.
