The Brookhaven Junior Auxiliary will begin selling tickets on Aug. 12 for the 27th annual Peel ‘Em and Eat ‘Em Shrimp Dinner in October.

Tickets are being sold for $15 and the dinner pick-up will be on Thursday, Oct. 16 and will be from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Brookhaven Recreation Department located on Highway 51. Once you have purchased a ticket, you simply show up at the designated area and bring home the plates for supper.

“We made the plates for you to carry home for dinner right then,” said Juliana Adams, Brookhaven JA public relations chairwoman.

The shrimp dinner plates will consist of boiled shrimp, potato salad, crackers and cocktail sauce. The desserts will be sold separately and include homemade cakes, cookies, brownies and pies.

“This is the only fundraiser for Brookhaven JA, and it funds all our projects throughout the year,” said Adams.

The local JA uses the money raised by the shrimp dinners to fund multiple community service projects such as the Wish Tree, help stock clothes closets for children and Healthy You health fair for fifth and sixth grades in schools. JA also organizes Boy Talk and Girl Talk through the Obstetrician-Gynecology doctor’s office to educate youths in the spring as well as an assistance committee that offer limited financial support, such as groceries or back-to-school clothes for children, to families who may have lost their home in a fire or who are enduring a hard time. In addition to service projects, the JA gives the Will Valentine Scholarship annually to a high school senior as well as piloting the EARS program to help provide reading tutors in schools.
