Calling all artists: BRAG competition is coming up in October

Area artists have the next two months to roll up their sleeves, get out their paints and brushes, sculpting clay or other media and get to work on their entries for the upcoming Brookhaven Regional Arts Guild Annual Art Competition.

Registration of entries will be held Oct. 1 in the Vernon Room of the Lincoln County Library from 10 a.m. to noon and from 2 to 4 p.m.

“We have so many talented artists in this area,” BRAG President Sue Minter said. “This art competition gives all of them an opportunity to display their art and be recognized for their art.”

Artists can compete in five categories: Oil, Acrylics, Pastels, Photography and Mixed Media/3D. The cost per entry is $10, and each artist is limited to three entries in the entire show.

Following registration, the art will be on display in the library from Oct. 1 through Oct. 31.

Although amounts for the awards are still being determined, Minter said cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place winners in each category, plus an overall best of show award.

She said there also will be other prizes from area merchants for categories of interest. These categories vary from year to year depending on the wishes of the donors, so the specifics aren’t available yet.

In addition, the public will have an opportunity to vote during the month of October on a “People’s Choice” Award to be presented for the artwork receiving the most votes.

Entries may be marked for sale, with all sales being handled between seller and buyer. A commission of 20 percent will be due to BRAG from non-members who sell a piece during the show and a 10 percent commission will be due from BRAG members who sell a piece during the show.

Minter encouraged all area artists to make plans to enter the competition. Besides offering an opportunity for awards and prizes, a major benefit for the artists is a chance to receive some recognition for their work.

“The competition gives artists in many venues a place to just show what they can do.”

A reception and awards presentation will be held at the library during the latter part of October. The time and date for the reception will be announced once plans are firmed up with the library, Minter said.
