Hornets take home Possum Bowl trophy

Bogue Chitto and Loyd Star fans gathered with excitement to W.E. Smith “Sambo” Field Friday night to see their beloved teams fight for the Possum Bowl. After surviving the hot and humid night, the Loyd Star Hornets managed to reclaim the Possum Bowl trophy, after five seasons, with a 55-0 trouncing of the Bogue Chitto Bobcats.

In the opening kickoff, the Bobcats (0-1) decided to kick to Loyd Star. The Hornets started the drive on the 44-yard line. At the 10-minute mark, Parker Flowers scores on a 46 yards run and the 2-point conversion was good.

On the next possession, Bogue Chitto started a drive on the 27-yard line. Bo Smithers took the handoff but ended up fumbling. The Hornets recovered the football.

Loyd Star cashed in on Bogue Chitto’s mistake, scoring on a 7-yard run with 8:55 left on a run by Peyton Flowers. The extra-point was no good.

At the 5:38 mark, BC was forced to punt the ball after failing to convert on downs. With 4:41 left in the first quarter, Parker Flowers would add to the Hornets lead with a 42-yard touchdown run. Peyton Flowers kick was good.

On the next series, the Bobcats lined up to punt. Loyd Star’s Peyton Flowers managed to hustle in to block the punt and recovered it in the endzone for another touchdown at the 2:36 mark.

To end the first quarter, the Hornets’ offense scored again with a 41-yard touchdown run by Brett Calcote and was successful on the 2-point conversion.

With 9:01 left in the second quarter, the Hornets offense would score again on a long run by the Calcote and Peyton Flowers’ extra-point kick.

At the 6:09 mark, the Bobcats had another costly mistake as BC’s quarterback threw an interception as Loyd Star’s Blake Ramsey came up with the pick. The Hornets continued to add to their lead and scored on a 23-yard run. Peyton Flowers’s kick was no good. Ray Richardson scored on a 25-yard run with the 5:09 left.

To end the quarter, the Bobcats threw another interception to Loyd Star’s Ray Richardson.

To start the fourth quarter the Bobcats turned the ball over on downs. Both teams had put their younger players in to get some playing time. To end the game, the Bobcats threw another interception as Loyd Star’s Willie Smith was on the receiving end.

Offensively, Loyd Star rushed for 345 yard. Zac Arnold led the way for the Hornets with eight rushes for 177 yards and three touchdowns. Parker Flowers rushed for 88 yards on nine carries

Defensively for the Bobcats, Matthew Black led the team with 5 tackles. Brandon Blackwell, Bo Smithers, Devin McEwen, and Henry Thomas contributed with 4 tackles a piece. Kobe Roberts and Seth Hodges had 3 tackles apiece.

Peyton Flowers was the top defender for the Hornets with 12 tackles. Anfernee Claire contributed five stops. Ramsey, Richardson and Smith had an interception each.

The Bobcats will host the Enterprise Yellow Jackets next Thursday night at Troy Smith Field. The Hornets will travel to Prentiss for a Friday night contest.
