WESSON – A rivalry that dates all the way back to 1936 will be renewed this Thursday in Summit as the No. 10 Copiah-Lincoln Wolfpack takes on the Southwest Bears. The Wolfpack (2-1), who moved up from No. 11 to No. 10 in the latest NJCAA Top 20 Poll, are playing their MACJC South Division opener. The Bears (0-2, 0-1) dropped their division opener last week, 31-29, at No. 6 Jones County.

In their 50-0 win last week over Mississippi Delta, Co-Lin was led by sophomore running back Diquan Davis. The sophomore from Greenville returned the game’s opening kickoff 94-yards for a touchdown and finished with 96 yards rushing on 11 carries and added a 1-yard rushing TD. Sophomore quarterback Daniel Fitzwater threw for 137 yards on 9-of-13 passing in one half of action. Brookhaven High product Zach Smith quarterbacked the second half for Co-Lin and finished 3-of-5 for 33 yards passing. Wide receiver Germie Martin also completed one pass, a 21-yard toss to Koy McFarland. Fitzwater threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Donald Gray and a 1-yard scoring pass to freshman wide receiver Jalen Jackson. Jackson, a North Pike product, wasn’t the only former Jaguar to score for the Wolfpack. Former North Pike standout Lakedric Lee debuted after missing the first two games with an injury. A running back, Lee ran for 64 yards on six carries and scored on a 6-yard touchdown run. Sophomore running back Joshua Bates also added a 1-yard touchdown run.

The Co-Lin defense was exceptional in limiting Delta to 81 yards of total offense for the game. Roshard Burney led the Delta ground attack with 16 yards rushing on nine carries. Delta quarterback Devine Adams was harassed into a 4-of-12 night with 55 passing yards gained. Co-Lin’s Joseph Este picked off an Adam’s pass to end the first half. Wolfpack cornerback Arthur Maulet caused and recovered a fumble and defensive back Dy-Celious Reese blocked a Delta punt. The punt blocked by Reese was recovered by freshman linebacker Aaron Fairley in the end zone for a Co-Lin score. Demond Tucker led the Co-Lin defense with seven tackles and two sacks. Co-Lin kicker Greg Nickles finished 5-for-7 on point after attempts and made a 23-yard field goal.

Southwest held a 29-28 lead over Jones County before a 28-yard field goal in the fourth quarter put the Bobcats up for good. Southwest is under the direction of second-year head coach Tucker Peavey. Southwest dropped their season opener, 52-14, to No. 1 East Mississippi and had their next game cancelled due to lightning. The Bears were leading, 14-0 in the first quarter, when lightening forced their game versus Mississippi Delta to be called off.

Last season Co-Lin took a 45-14 win over Southwest in Wesson on Oct. 24. Co-Lin was victorious, 23-10, the last time the two teams met in Summit.

The game kicks off at 7 p.m. in Summit and can be heard on 104.3 FM in Brookhaven and on colinathletics.com.
