FC Bulldogs upset Leake Central

CARTHAGE – Franklin County senior Michael White showed off his speed and his big-play abilities during the Bulldogs’ upset victory Friday.

The FC Bulldogs came out on top with a 29-14 score against previously undefeated Leake Central.

White, a 5-9, 170-pound senior, scored on a 96 yard kickoff return and ran an interception back 75 yards for a touchdown to help the Bulldogs move to 2-3 on the season.

FCHS opens up district play Friday by hosting the Wilkinson County Wildcats.

Leake Central (5-1), class 4A members, scored first with an 18-yard run by Jessie Hoye.

Franklin County answered with a 34-yard touchdown scamper from junior running back Courtney Smith. Dontavious Felton blocked a punt moments later for the Bulldogs, which resulted in a safety. FC led 9-7.

FC senior Danzel Allen returned a botched punt 27 yards for a score in the second quarter to give the Bulldogs a commanding 16-7 lead heading into intermission.

In the second half, White put on a show, with both kickoff and pick-6 returns. White showcased his 4.5 forty-yard dash speed and added some elusive moves to overwhelm tacklers.

The Bulldogs, coached by Anthony Hart, needed the big plays from its defense and special teams. Playing without the services of sophomore speedster De’Martre Collins at quarterback the Bulldogs only mustered 71 yards of total offense and six first downs. Senior running back Bernard Selmon got his first career start at QB, while Smith finished with 62 yards rushing on 15 carries and a touchdown.

Leake Central got another Hoye touchdown from 16-yards out late in the fourth quarter.

The Franklin High defense, oversaw by defensive coordinator Adam Barron was led by DeAnthony King and Chris O’Quinn with 15 tackles apiece. DeAnthony Hunt added five hits, two QB hurries and forced a fumble.
