Funeral Services for Mildred Burkhalter Strittman of Brookhaven are 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014, at New Prospect Baptist Church with burial in Hollywood Cemetery. The Rev. Willie Welch, Rev. Glenn Bird, Rev. Jimmy T. Smith Jr. and Rev. John Rushing will officiate. Pallbearers will be Jamie Whittington, Marcalan Whittington, Patrick Brown, Adrian Garcia, Bill McCullough and Levi McCullough; honorary pallbearers will be Carroll Bruce Dunn and Byron Cothren. Jones Family Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014, from 5 until 8 p.m. at New Prospect Baptist Church and will continue Thursday at 1 p.m. until time of service at the church.

Mrs. Strittman, 83, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2014, at her residence. She was born on Jan. 25, 1931, in McComb to Oscar “Doc” Burkhalter and Nannie Roberts Burkhalter.

She attended Oakdale School. She was a homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She enjoyed cooking, playing cards with the family, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had worked at Gillis Drug Store back when they had a soda fountain and also worked at Croft Aluminum in McComb and Magnolia. She was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church in Brookhaven.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, James Rufus “Big Will” Strittman; one daughter, Mary Jane Strittman Norwood; one grandson, Shane Wesley Strittman; one brother, Jessie N. Burkhalter; one sister, Elsie Reeves and husband, Almond; a niece, Nancy Jane Reeves; and a nephew, Henry A. Reeves.

Survivors are her daughter, Brenda Strittman Whittington and husband, Pete, of Brookhaven; her son, Jesse W. Strittman and wife, Mary Nell, of Tylertown; seven grandchildren, Emily Norwood of McComb, Becki Norwood McCullough and husband, Bill, of Summit, Jamie Whittington and wife, Melissa, of Meadville, Marcalan Whittington and wife, Jennifer, of Brookhaven, Ellie Whittington of Brookhaven, Jessica Strittman Shaw and husband, Rusty, of Whitesboro, Texas, and Jennifer Strittman Garcia of Jayess; eight great-grandchildren, Abbi McCullough, Levi McCullough, Madi McCullough, Devan Whittington, Raney Whittington, Haley Whittington, Calan Whittington, Adrian Garcia; one great-great-granddaughter, Braceigh Ann Whittington; three step-children, Byron Cothren and Dixie Cothren, of Meadville, Loran Gerald and husband, Barry, of Tylertown; two step great-grandchildren, Corey Cook of Tylertown and Shelby Cook of Hattiesburg; one niece, Anne Norris and husband, Dale, of Collins; and other numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and a host of friends.

Flowers are appreciated and welcomed. The family ask that donations be made in Mrs. Strittman’s name to the Music Ministry of New Prospect Baptist Church, 691 Highway 84 West Brookhaven, Ms 39601.
