Oak Forest Academy defeats Brookhaven Academy

MCCOMB – The Brookhaven Cougars and Lady Cougars suffered a loss to the Oak Forest Academy Yellowjackets in Day Two of the Thanksgiving holiday tournament at Parklane Academy Tuesday afternoon.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Jackets swarmed all over the Lady Cougars to earn a 66-21 victory.

In the boys’ matchup, the Jackets managed to outscore the Cougars to prevail 56-44.

Brookhaven Academy will take the rest of the week off to rest and to enjoy their Thanksgiving break before returning to action Tuesday, as they prepare to host the Copiah Academy Colonels for five games, starting with seventh grade action at 3:15 p.m., followed by junior varsity and varsity action.

The Lady Cougars (0-8) are experiencing a rebuilding year as they have only three seniors on the team, whom are currently injured. The rest of the team is freshmen and sophomore girls that are working hard to improve everyday in practice and in games.

Tuesday’s game was a big learning experience for the young team as they faced a tough Oak Forest Academy team. The Lady Jackets stormed out the gates and quickly took over the contest with a 19-6 run in the first quarter and a 15-3 run in the second quarter to command a 34-9 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Oak Forest continued to pour it on BA as they outscored the Lady Cougars 33-12 to collect the win.

Leah Case powered the Lady Cougars with a team-high nine points. Anna Kathryn Smith chipped in with six points.

Caylon Brabham pumped in a game-high 23 points to lead the Lady Jackets. Lindsey Neal contributed 11 points.

The boys’ game provided a lot of excitement for their basketball fans. The Jackets set the tone of the contest in the first quarter as they secured a 14-9 lead after one quarter of action.

In the second quarter, both teams turned up the heat offensively and defensively, but the Jackets won the scoring battle 12-10 to take a 26-19 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was basically the difference maker that spoil BA’s comeback attempt late in the contest as Oak Forest Academy went on a 10-2 run.

In the final frame of action, the Cougars outscored the Jackets 23-20, but fell to inch closer as the buzzer sound.

Caleb Brown and Peyton Hood were the top scorers for the Cougars with 17 points apiece. Hood had another double-double performance night with 11 rebounds. Brown grabbed five rebounds.

Ashton Spears paced the Jackets’ attack with a game-high 22 points. Tyler Hasson contributed 15 points
