The Loyd Star Hornets captured the Lincoln County boys’ crown Saturday night after stinging the Bogue Chitto Bobcats 73-42 in high school basketball action at the Bobcat Palace.

“The boys played extremely well offensively and defensively,” Loyd Star Coach Gene Britt said. “Overall, it was a total team effort, and I was glad to give everyone plenty of playing time.”

Loyd Star returns to action Tuesday as they visit Wesson to take on their long time rivals the Wesson Cobras for four games. Junior high action begins at 4 p.m. The varsity girls contest begins at 6 p.m. followed by the boys’ game.

Loyd Star 73, Bogue Chitto 42 

The Hornets high-octane offense quickly overpowered the young Bobcats in the first quarter of action as Loyd Star stormed out to claim a 21-6 lead and continued to add to their lead in the second quarter with a 22-10 run to take a commanding 43-16 lead into halftime.

In the final two frames of action, the Hornets (8-1) held off the Bobcats rally with a 15-13 run in both quarters to claim their first Lincoln Country trophy in four years.

Senior Edrick Alsworth powered the Hornets attack with 19 points and six rebounds. Levi Redd fueled the flames with 15 points and led on the boards with eight rebounds. Caleb Yarborough contributed 10 points and had six assists. Ryan Smith scored eight points. Javion Beard, Cade Hodges and Dorian Beard provided five points apiece. Zach Arnold netted four points and Gregory Hooks had two points. Brad Jasper collected four rebounds, three assists and had two blocked shots.

Jeremiah Perkins paced the Bobcats (1-12) offense with 10 points. D.J Nunnery and Brooks Ingles contributed nine points each. Dakota McGary had seven points. Will Fauver scored four points, and Tyler Brumfield added three points.
