Tell your out-of-town family members to leave the heavy coats at home this Christmas.

Christmas day temperatures in the Brookhaven area should be in the upper 50s, meteorologists say.

Jackson National Weather Service meteorologist David Cox predicted this year’s holiday temperatures will be warmer than those of 2013 and nowhere near the record highs or lows.

On Christmas Eve, Brookhaven is expected to have temperature highs of approximately 56 degrees with an overnight low of approximately 36 degrees. Christmas day temperatures are predicted to reach 59 degrees.

Jackson National Weather Service meteorologist Anna Weber said on Christmas day residents can expect partly cloudy skies and winds from the south at five to 10 miles per hour.

Cox said the warmer temperatures on Christmas day are due to a storm system and cloud coverage moving in Friday, Dec. 26.

“It’ll bring in warmer air and keep temperatures from falling as much,” Cox said.

Cox said Brookhaven residents could see some showers Tuesday, but the rain should be moving out that same evening.

It’s been 85 years since Brookhaven residents enjoyed a true “white Christmas,” Cox said. Meteorologically speaking, a “white Christmas” occurs when an area has an inch or more of snow, he said. Based on the National Weather Service’s data, 1929 was the last time Brookhaven experienced a white Christmas because of a significant snowstorm in the area.

“The chances of (a white Christmas) happening here are very low, less than 10 percent,” he said.

Brookhaven’s record high on Christmas was 81 degrees in then 1950s. Its coldest Christmas was 1983 with a record low of 7 degrees.
