West Lincoln, Loyd Star advances to junior high finals

The Junior High Lincoln County Tournament provided plenty of excitement in basketball action as local basketball fans gathered at Enterprise Gymnasium to witness four exciting games Thursday night.

In the two girls games, the Loyd Star Lady Hornets knocked off the Bogue Chitto Lady Cats 27-21 in the opener. In the nightcap, the West Lincoln Lady Bears kept their undefeated streak alive as they roared past the Enterprise Lady Jackets 53-9.

In the two boys games, the Loyd Star Hornets edged the Bogue Chitto Bobcats 41-40 in the second contest. In final game of the night, the West Lincoln Bears squeezed past the Enterprise Jackets to win 40-38.

The Junior High tournament will resumes action on Monday at Enterprise Gymnasium. Bogue Chitto will battle Enterprise in consolation games in both girls and boys’ games. The girls tip off at 4, followed by the boys at 5 p.m.

West Lincoln and Loyd Star advances to the Championship game in both girls and boys action. The girls’ game starts at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 7.

Loyd Star 27, Bogue Chitto 21 

The Lady Hornets and the Lady Cats battled to an 11-all tie in the first half of action, but Loyd Star managed to put away in the third quarter with a 12-6 run to claim the win.

Andrea Butler powered the Lady Hornets (11-2) with 15 points. Sarah Britt contributed 10 points.

Karly Leake was the top scorer fort he Lady Cats with eight points. Tyuana Brumfield provided four points.

Loyd Star 41, Bogue Chitto 40 

In the boys contest, the Bobcats roared out to an early lead in the first half of action to take a 17-13 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Hornets fought back and the outscored Bogue Chitto 28-23 in the final two frames to skinned the Bobcats and advance to the championship game.

Dane Smith was the offensive leader for the Hornets (10-3) with 15 points. Zabien Price chipped in with 10 points. Brent Cade and Jett Calcote scored seven points apiece.

Malik Richardson directed the Bobcats with 16 points. Josh Thomas and Jermaine Black provided six points apiece.

West Lincoln 53, Enterprise 9 

The Lady Bears (11-0) quickly took care of business in the nightcap of the girls game as they roared to a 28-7 halftime lead and cruised in the second half with a 25-2 run to clinched the win.

Jana Case paced the Lady Bears’ high-octane offense with 24 points. Skylar Hall continued the onslaught with 12 points. Megan Gerald provided seven points.

Brittany Barnett led the Lady Jackets with three points. Breyuanna Johnson, Kristen Walker and Kristina Diamond scored two points each.

West Lincoln 40, Enterprise 38 

In the last contest of the night, the Bears and Jackets battled in a close game as West Lincoln took a 23-13 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Enterprise rallied back to outscored the Bears 23-14, but West Lincoln’s Michael Brotherns game winning layup in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter spoiled the Jackets comeback attempt for the victory.

Jatavian Lewis paced the Bears (7-4) offensive attack with 23 points. Karlton Byrd contributed nine points. Brotherns chipped in with six points.

JaDarrion Allen was the sparkplug to led the Jackets with a game-high 26 points. Peytin Jergins added 10 points.
