Loyd Star Hornets sweeps Enterprise

The Loyd Star Hornets and Lady Hornets continued to roll in Region 7-2A basketball action as they swept the Enterprise Yellow Jackets in four games Friday night in Loyd Star’s Gymnasium.

In the girls’ contest, the Lady Hornets survived a defensive battle against the Lady Jackets to prevail 32-26.

In boys’ action, the Hornets came out on fire to start the contest and dominated the Jackets to claim a 74-40 win.

In junior varsity action, the Lady Hornets defeated the Lady Jackets 19-14, and Loyd Star was victorious over Enterprise in the boys’ game 45-16.

Loyd Star returns to action Tuesday as they travel to Columbia to take on the East Marion Eagles for another division test. The varsity girls are set to start at 6 p.m., followed by the boys’ contest.

Enterprise will also be in action Tuesday as they prepare to welcome their Region/Lincoln County rivals, the West Lincoln Bears. The girls’ game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity boys.

Loyd Star 32, Enterprise 26 

The Lady Hornets and the Lady Jackets provided a classic defensive battle for their basketball fans as the team fought in a close contest in the opening quarter as Loyd Star led 5-2.

In the second quarter, both teams scored nine points each as the Lady Hornets carried a 14-11 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Loyd Star and Enterprise continued their defensive bout, but the Lady Hornets managed to squeeze out the win by outscoring the Lady Jackets 18-15 in the final two frames of action.

“This was a good defensive battle until the very end for both teams,” Loyd Star Coach Gene “Moochie” Britt said. “In the second half, we managed to get going offensively by hitting some key shots to keep us ahead to be able pull out the win. Enterprise has a very good team, and they fought us hard on every possession.”

Toni Banks was the offensive leader for the Lady Hornets (12-3, 2-0) with seven points and two steals. Jordan Shelby contributed six points and led on the boards with eight rebounds. Hannah Dickerson provided five points and grabbed six rebounds.

Alissa Barlow pumped in a game-high 10 points to lead the Lady Jackets (12-6, 0-3). Carlee Nations chipped in with seven points and had three steals. Adrienne Byrd and Barlow were the leaders on the boards with five rebounds a piece.

“I was very pleased with my girls effort,” said Enterprise coach Jill Nations said. “The girls played hard and did not quit.”

Loyd Star 74, Enterprise 40 

In the boys’ contest, Loyd Star and Enterprise fans watched a fast-paced offensive show as the Hornets quickly overpowered the Jackets in the first quarter to claim a 28-7 advantage.

In the second quarter, the Hornets continued their offensive show with a 17-7 run to take a commanding 45-17 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Hornets (12-3, 2-0) picked up where they left off at in the first half and increased their lead more with a 23-12 run to lead 68-26 after three quarters of action.

In the final frame of action, the Jackets (9-10, 0-3) outscored Loyd Star 14-6.

“We came out and shot the ball really well to start the game,” Britt said. “Offensively, the guys played really well as a team, and I was pleased to give everyone plenty of playing time.”

Senior guard Caleb Yarborough led the Hornets’ offensive attack pouring in a game-high 23 points with five assists and three steals. Javion Beard continued the onslaught with 12 points. Edrick Alsworth netted 10 points and led on the boards with eight rebounds. Ryan Smith provided eight points and grabbed four rebounds. Levi Redd scored five points and helped on the boards with six rebounds.

Dwayne Pendleton was the top shooter for the Jackets with eight points. Austin Carter, Zach Hodges and Jontavious Smith cashed in seven points each

“The guys played hard, but we still have to learn how to compete,” said Enterprise Coach John Knight said.

In junior varsity action,  the Lady Hornets knocked off the Lady Jackets 19-14.

Caylee Yarborough paced the Lady Hornets with nine points. Lydia Britt contributed five points.

Emaya Smith led the Lady Jackets with six points. Eden Ward and Carley Nations provided three points apiece.

In the boys’ game, Loyd Star crushed the Jackets 45-16.

Zach Arnold and Cade Hodges directed the Hornets with 13 points apiece.

Jadarrian Allen was the top scorer for the Jackets with six points. Cade Feltus chipped in with five points.
