Lady Wolves defeat Gulf Coast, men falls short

WESSON – The Co-Lin Wolves and the Lady Wolves wrap up their regular with a split decision over the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs Thursday night in JUCO action at Mullins Gymnasium.

In the womens’ contest, the Lady Wolves (23-0, 14-0) finished the regular season undefeated with a 80-45 win over the Lady Bulldogs.

In the mens’ game, the Wolves and the Bulldogs battled in a Do-or-Die situation to claim the final spot for the State playoffs. The Bulldogs used their size in the low-post to disrupt Co-Lin game plan to prevail 73-64.

The Lady Wolves will be in action next week as Co-Lin prepares to host the JUCO State Playoffs. Game times and opponents have not been set as of right yet. Check Sunday edition for the schedule.

Co-Lin 80, Gulf Coast 45

The Lady Wolves and the Lady Bulldogs battled in a close contest in the first few minutes of the first half, before Co-Lin turned up the heat both offensively and defensively to take a 38-20 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Wolves continued their strong offensive and defensive game plan and outscored the Lady Bulldogs 42-25 to collect the victory.

“This was a good game,” said Co-Lin women coach Gwyn Young. “It is very tough for a team finished the season undefeated. The girls played hard and we are glad to get the win. Overall, I was please with their efforts.”

After the game, Co-Lin and the Lady Wolves honored Coach Gwyn Young with a special ceremony to recognized his achievement of winning 850-plus games in his career. The 2015 Lady Wolves basketball team gave him a autograph picture for finishing undefeated in the regular season. Coach Young also received a autograph basketball from his past state championship teams as several members gathered to honor his special moment.

Alexis Collins pumped in a game-high 22 points to lead the Lady Wolves. Jamilah Sanders chipped in with 14 points. Kelley Allen and Arnissayur Robinson provided 11 points apiece. Toni Woods was the leader on the boards with seven rebounds.

Bird Watson paced the Lady Bulldogs with 20 points and five rebounds. Kalynn Smith netted 10 points and had five rebounds.

Gulf Coast 73, Co-Lin 64

In the mens’ contest, the Wolves and Bulldogs battled in a Do-or-Die game as the winner advances to the state playoffs next week.

In the first half of action, both teams fought in a defensive contest as both teams traded the lead on several occasion. The Bulldogs ended up taking a 27-25 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the action continued as Co-Lin and Gulf Coast fought to keep the game close. In the last five minutes of action, the Bulldogs managed to pull away and build a 10-point lead over the Wolves.

The Wolves continued to work as they cut down Gulf Coast lead on several attempts but the Bulldog relied on their size to wear down the Wolves to earn the win.

“Both teams did a great job playing hard,” said Co-Lin coach Kenny Bizot. “We knew coming in that this game was huge. The guys were nervous but continued to play hard.”

“Gulf Coast’s size managed to wear us down as the game went on in the paint and we did not have answer for it,” said Bizot. “Overall, my guys played hard from start to finished and I was very pleased with their effort.”

Chris Williams was the top scorer for the Wolves with 12 points and eight rebounds. Terry Morris contributed 11 points. Jordan Lumpkin provided 10 points and had seven rebounds.

The Bulldogs had four players to score in double figures as Jamarri Johnson lead the charge with 18 points. Justin Coleman provided a double-double performance of 13 points and 14 rebounds. Deshawn Jones chipped in with 13 points. Anfernee Hampton scored 10 points. Michael Lewis helped on the boards with 10 rebounds.
