The Loyd Star Lady Hornets kickoff off their Class 2A State Playoff run with an impressive 71-16 victory over the Madison St. Joseph Lady Bruins Thursday night in the opening round of MHSAA playoffs at Loyd Star Gymnasium.

“The girls played extremely well,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “I was very pleased to give everyone plenty of playing time. St. Joe has a very good but young team. Our girls did a great job getting the win. Now, we must get ready for our next tough opponent tonight.”

The Lady Hornets (20-6) will be in action tonight as they travel to Heidelberg to face the Heidelberg Lady Oilers in the second round of the Class 2A State Playoffs.

Loyd Star 71, St. Joe 16 

The Loyd Star Lady Hornets came out and quickly overpowered the Lady Bruins with their depth and scoring ability as they clobbered Madison St. Joe 27-4 in the opening quarter.

In the second quarter, Loyd Star continued their strong offensive surge with a 15-2 run to take a commanding 42-6 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Hornets outscored the Lady Bruins 28-10 in the final two frames of action to collect the win.

Mackenzie Smith led the Lady Hornets offensive explosion with 13 points. Marcey Givens fueled the fire with 12 points, four rebounds and five assists. Hannah Dickerson chipped in with nine points, five rebounds and two blocked shots. Jordan Shelby provided seven points and had five rebounds. Faith Berguron scored five points and had two steals.

Somer Dotson was the leading scorer for the Lady Bruins with 10 points. Bergen Teeter added six points.
