The Loyd Star Hornets managed to overcome a strong pitchers duel to prevail 4-3 over the visiting Enterprise Yellow Jackets Tuesday night in Region 7-2A baseball action at Smith Field.

“We came out really flat to begin the game,” said Loyd Star coach Jared Britt. “The guys did a good job fighting back to scratch out the win. Levi Redd pitched a great game for us and he did a good job keeping Enterprise’s hitters off balance at the plate. Overall, I am very pleased with the hard fought victory.”

The Hornets (8-5, 5-0) and the Jackets (7-6, 4-1) continue action Thursday night at Enterprise. Junior varsity action starts at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6:30 p.m.

Loyd Star 4, Enterprise 3 

Loyd Star and Enterprise’s fans witnessed a great defensive pitchers duel Tuesday night at Smith Field. Both teams entered in the contest undefeated in division action.

In the top of the first inning, the Jackets quickly jumped on the Hornets as they pushed two runs across the plate to secure an early 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Hornets managed to break through Enterprise’s tough defensive stand to tie the game at 2-all.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Jackets fought hard to reclaim the lead in the top of the fifth inning as they scored one run to take a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Loyd Star answered with two runs of their own, to claim the first lead of the game and defended of Enterprise’s attacks in the sixth and seventh innings to clinch the win.

“This was a great game played by both teams,” said Enterprise coach Cass Brister. “Both teams pitchers had a great game and both defensives executed. We just came up short at the end.”

Levi Redd was the winning pitcher for the Hornets with five strikeouts and one walks.

Landon Gartman suffered the setback on the mound for Enterprise with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Caleb Yarborough, Levi Redd, Brett Calcote, Bradyn Brister and Lamar Lang powered the Loyd Star’s offensive attack with a single each.

Tanner Waldrop was the top hitter for the Jackets at the plate with a double and a single. Hunter Richardson provided a double. Hitting safely was Marvin Butler.

In junior varsity action, Loyd Star defeated Enterprise 5-4.

Lane Rogers pitched the win for Loyd Star. Blake Ramsey led the Hornets at the plate with a double and three-RBIs. Brandon Lang, Dylan Smith and Logan Murray hit safely.
