MONTICELLO-The North Pike Jaguars defeated Lawrence County 6-1 in Wednesday afternoon high school baseball action at Jimmie Davis Park. North Pike got a complete-game three-hitter from left-hander Dallas Smith. Smith struck out five.

With the win, George Lott’s Jaguars improved to 13-3 overall and 8-1 in Division 7-4A play. Lawrence County, under first-year coach Josh Garrett, fell to 13-8 overall, and 4-5 in the division.

North Pike took advantage of two Lawrence County errors to plate two first-inning runs. Jacob Gill and Blake Dunaway had hits in the frame. In the top of the second, Gill singled and stole a base. He advanced on two wild pitches, making it a 3-0 game.

Lawrence County’s only run came in the top of the fourth. Gabriel Lewis singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a Kody Smith grounder. Lewis had two of the Cougars’ three hits. Marcus Atterberry had the other. All were singles.

North Pike designated hitter Patrick Roberts hit a solo homer in the top of the sixth, extending the Jaguars’ lead to 4-1. In the seventh, another LCHS error opened the door to a two-run Jaguar rally. Dunaway had an RBI double in that frame. Dunaway, Gill and Brantley Hughes each had two hits for North Pike.

Junior left-hander Josh Stephens gave it a good fight for Lawrence County. In five and 2/3 innings, he gave up six hits and struck out four. Stephens was relieved in the sixth by Kody Smith.

“We’re pretty good some days,” said long-time LCHS assistant Craig Davis, “but today really wasn’t one of those days. When your error total exceeds your hit total, you’re almost certainly going to lose. Hats off to North Pike. They did a good job.”

Lawrence County will travel to North Pike on Friday.
