Second Baptist to hold benefit for woman fighting cancer

The local community is coming together to help a Brookhaven woman as she battles with cancer.

A benefit for Sabrina Dixon will be held at Second Baptist Church at 6 p.m. Saturday. James Dixon, Sabrina’s brother-in-law, said the event will be a church service with the goal of raising donations. There will be singing, dancing and praise, Dixon said, and there are several choirs invited.

Sabrina was diagnosed with head and neck cancer a couple of months ago, Dixon said, and the financial burden has become too much for Sabrina and her husband, Stanley Dixon. The two have four grown children, and they attend Mt. Zion Church in Bogue Chitto.

Sabrina’s cousin, Lashanya Kelly, said Sabrina has been taking chemotherapy treatments in Jackson every two weeks. These treatments keep her at the hospital from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and are very expensive. Initially, Sabrina was told she would need three treatments, but as doctors have seen a little more growth, she is going to need more chemo over what will be a long process.

Kelly said Sabrina is known in the community for being a faithful, generous woman.

“She’ll give you the shirt off her back; she’ll help anyone,” she said. “And this has not gotten her down, she is hopeful, her spirit is still up, and she says she knows God is in control of all of this.”

Dixon said everybody is invited.

“We want to get as much help as we can for her,” he said.

Donations can be made to Pastor James Dixon (Second Baptist Church), Pastor Edward Dillon at (601) 754-7106 (Mighty God MB Church) or Lashanya Kelly at (601) 757-5017 (Second Baptist Church).
