Loyd Star recognizes athletes in banquet

Loyd Star’s administration, coaches and family recognized their Hornet athletes during a banquet Wednesday night to honor the football, cross-country, girls’ basketball, boys’ basketball, girls’ soccer, boys’ soccer, golf, baseball, cheerleader, powerlift, track, softball and tennis teams.

Loyd Star Principal Mrs. Robin Case opened the ceremony by welcoming the large crowd to the banquet that was held at the Lincoln County Civic Center.

After the meal, coaches recognized their team’s achievements during the year and players were given awards for their hard work.

In football, Brett Calcote received a great honor as he was selected for the first annual Peyton Flowers Scholarship Award. Cole Smith captured the Most Valuable Lineman Award and Parker Flowers earned the Most Valuable Back honors.

In powerlift, Terril Lloyd took home the Best Pound for Pound Lifter and All-State Powerlifter Awards.

In cross-country, freshman Abby Thomas was selected as the Most Valuable Female Runner and earned the Coaches Award in Track. Jett Calcote secured the Most Valuable Male Runner.

In girls’ basketball, Marcey Givens was honored with the Most Valuable Player, Best Offensive Player, Most Three Point Shots Made and Scholastic Award honors. Hannah Dickerson received the Best Defensive Player Award and Jordan Shelby earned the Best Rebounder Award.

In boys’ basketball, Edrick Alsworth took home several honors as he was selected Best Offensive Player, Most Valuable Overall Player, Best Free Throw Shooter and Best Rebounder Awards. Dorian Beard won the Best Defensive Player Award.

In girls’ soccer, Mallory Holden was recognized as the Most Valuable Player. Madisyn Brister earned the Most Valuable Offensive Award. Shelby Richardson secured the Most Valuable Defensive Award. Lesley Walker was selected as the Most Valuable Mid Fielder.

In boys’ soccer, Hayden Brownlee won the overall Most Valuable Player Award. Blayne Brister was selected for the Most Valuable Offensive honors. Brett Calcote captured the Most Valuable Defensive Award and Jordan Michel was names the Most Valuable Mid Fielder.

In golf, Madi Lewis was selected as the Most Valuable Female Golfer and Sawyer Norton took home the Most Valuable Male Golfer.

In cheer, Ashlyn Locke was recognized with the Best All-Around Award. P’Laura King was honored with Most Spirited Award. Ruby McCullough earned the Leadership, Scholastic and Coaches Award honors.

In tennis, Cole Moak and Ashlyn Locke was honored as the Most Valuable Players in girls and boys tennis. Blayne Blister and Moak were selected for the Most Valuable Doubles Team.

In baseball, Caleb Yarborough captured the Most Outstanding Pitcher and the Most Outstanding Player honors. Levi Redd earned the Most Outstanding Pitcher Award. Brett Calcote was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year and Hayden Brownlee secured the Defensive Player of the Year honors.

In fastpitch softball, Ali Gartman and Makenzie Smith earned the Most Valuable Player honors. Gartman also received the Slugger and Best Batting Average Awards. Johnna Norman won the Golden Glove Award.

Before the end of the ceremony, Hornets’ Athletic Director Billy Vaughn presented two special awards. He recognized two seniors Ruby McCullough and Cole Moak with the Scholar-Athlete Awards.

Vaughn closed the ceremony, thanking the athletes, coaches and families for all of their hard work and accomplishments during Loyd Star’s outstanding season.
