Mobile games are on the move

Mobility: 1 (noun) the ability to move or be moved freely and easily. 2 (game) what serious games should NOT be.

Flappy Bird. Candy Crush. Clash of Clans. Crossy Roads. What do all of these “games” have in common? They are mindless, non-comital fun for when you are away from home and find yourself with nothing else to view on Facebook.

Now, think of your greatest gaming experience (if you have one.) Odds are it includes a fully fledged console or PC title with innovative graphics, gameplay and story.

Where these two things cross is a danger to high-end gaming experiences of the future. In the past, not even as long ago as 2014, mobile gaming was relegated to the interesting pass time of the waiting public. Nowadays, with the progress of mobile hardware technology, mobile games have tried to break into mainstream gaming with high-end graphics, larger games and better “gameplay.” This scares me.

One of the best fighting game franchises in recent history has been the collaboration between Marvel and Capcom aptly named “Marvel vs. Capcom.” After four titles produced together to rave reviews, Marvel suddenly pulled all licensed properties from Capcom. Their reasoning for this abandonment was reported to be that Marvel wanted to make their own fighting game.

At first, this excited the gaming community. One of the biggest entertainment companies in the world, with Disney money backing it, making a fighting game with all of the Marvel Universe to pull from for characters? What could go wrong?

It’s a mobile game. Yup. The gameplay which used to be intricately timed button combinations and special moves was reduced to “Mash your finger faster on the screen!”

Even Nintendo has announced that they will be developing titles specifically for mobile devices. Mobile games, cheap to make with high returns from microtransactions, have me afraid that Nintendo, along with the rest of the gaming developers in the world, will forego the gaming greatness of the console and PC past in favor of the quick buck.

Viva la controller.

Class dismissed.
