Mobile shuts out M-Braves again

PEARL — The Mississippi Braves were shutout by the Mobile BayBears for the second straight night, taking Friday night’s contest 5-0.

Mississippi (16-12, 49-47) had just three hits in the game. Mobile (17-10, 51-45) scored five runs on 10 hits. Edgar Garcia (2-0) faced the minimum and held the Braves to just two hits in five innings of work. He struck out three batters.

The BayBears took a 3-0 lead in the fifth. Tom Belza doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Garcia. He then scored on an error by the pitcher. Sean Jamieson and Socrates Brito both followed with base hits to load the bases with one out. Zach Borenstein delivered a RBI-single to center field to plate Garcia. Jamieson also came in to score on the play when Brito was caught up in a rundown between second and third.

KD Kang led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to center field. It was the first time the M-Braves had reached second in the game. The hit also extended Kang’s hitting streak to 15 games, dating back to July 9.

Mobile added a couple of runs in the ninth to make it 5-0. Rudy Flores walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. He then scored on a Ronnie Freeman base hit to right field. The BayBears then loaded the bases before Freeman scored on a wild pitch for the game’s final run.

Will Locante and Daniel Gibson worked two and two-thirds innings in relief. They allowed just one hit. Jake Barrett (S, 1) came on to record the final four outs and notch the save.

Stephen Janas (1-3) worked six frames for the Braves and took the loss. He gave up three runs, two earned, on seven hits and two walks while fanning four.
