Co-Lin to honor Cowart, Pippen as alumni of the year

WESSON — Carmon “Sandy” Cowart of Terrell, Texas and Dr. Sherry Chance Pippen of Monticello will be honored as Alumni of the Year at Copiah-Lincoln Community College’s homecoming on Saturday during the Alumni Association’s awards luncheon and annual meeting set to begin at 11 a.m. in the cafeteria on the college’s Wesson campus.

Cowart is a 1953 graduate of Copiah-Lincoln Agricultural High School and attended the college for a year before transferring to the University of Mississippi where he received a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy. He spent the first 10 years of his 58-year career as a pharmacist at Walgreens Pharmacy in Jackson before returning home to Texas where he has owned and operated Terrell Pharmacy for 48 years.

Cowart is a member of the Terrell Independent School Board, Terrell Chamber of Commerce, Rotary International and has served on the boards of United Way and the Regional Mental Health and Retardation Center and is a Paul Harris Fellow. He is a member of Terrell Baptist Church, where he has served on the board of deacons for 45 years, and has been a Sunday school teacher for 48 years. He is married to the former Jo Ann Hennington, and they have four children, Ron Cowart (attended, deceased), Tami Brooks (‘82), Tracey Crowsey and Tara Duty, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Pippen is a 1997 graduate of Co-Lin, where she was head Colette and was a member of numerous clubs and organizations such as the English Club, Science Club, the Student Government Association, President’s Council and Phi Theta Kappa. She was selected to Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges, was a campus favorite and homecoming maid.

She received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Mississippi College and a doctorate of dentistry from the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry. She is a family dentist and owner of Oak Lane Family Dental in Monticello.

Pippen has served in numerous community and professional organizations such as the Mississippi Dental Association, the American Dental Association, and is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists. She is a past president of the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce and a member of Monticello Baptist Church. She is also a member of the Co-Lin Foundation Board of Directors and is a founding member of Co-Lin’s Band and Colette Alumni Chapter. She was honored by the chapter as the Stanley Stewart Outstanding Young Alum in 2012. She is married to Lynn Pippen, and they have two daughters, Kiley and Brenna Kate.

Outstanding staff and instructors, Sports Hall of Fame members and Band and Colette honorees will also be honored at the luncheon. Tickets are $12 and may be purchased at morning registration in Rea Auditorium, the Ewing Fine Arts building, or at the cafeteria prior to the luncheon.
