The Brookhaven Lady Panthers shut out the South Jones Lady Braves 8-0 Thursday night to advance to the quarterfinals of 5A state playoffs.

“I am so happy for our girls tonight. Getting past the first round has been a big goal for us this season. The girls kept fighting the entire game. Our bats finally heated up in the sixth inning. We are excited to get back to practice tomorrow and continue playing,” said BHS coach Mandy Vinson.

The Lady Panthers (21-6) will return to action Monday when they take on West Harrison or Picayune. The West Harrison/Picayune series was postponed due to the heavy rains and flooding on the Gulf Coast Thursday night. West Harrison won the first game of the series 2-1 Tuesday night.

Brookhaven 8, South Jones 0 

The Lady Panthers came out strong in the second game of the series and pounded out 11 hits during the game. Haley Speaks led Brookhaven with a homerun in the sixth inning.

Katherine Shell contributed two doubles and two singles. Macy Ziskin provided two singles. Hitting safely were Tia Bussey, Kat Wallace, Rileigh Allen and Cheyenne Motley.

South Jones had three hits during the seven-inning contest. Hitting safely for the Lady Braves were Madison Jones, Mackenzie Jones and Masey Blancett.

Shell was the winning pitcher with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Grace Stringer was the losing pitcher with two strikeouts and one walk.
