WESSON – The Wesson Lady Cobras’ softball season came to an end Thursday night after the team fell to the Raleigh Lady Lions in the Class 3A playoffs.

The Lady Lions defeated the Lady Cobras in the second game 12-10 to force a third game and shut out Wesson 9-0 to win the series.

The Lady Cobras beat the Lady Lions on the road Tuesday night with a final score of 4-3.

“The girls did a good job fighting hard in both games,” said Wesson coach Michelle Nunnery. “We had a chance to win the second game but we could not get the hits that we needed to get the victory. Overall, I was very pleased with our season. The girls fought hard all season to get here and this was a great learning experience for our young team.”

Raleigh 12, Wesson 10

The Lady Lions came out strong in the first inning to secure a 2-0 lead, but the Lady Cobras closed the gap, plating one in the bottom of the first.

Wesson tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth, but Raleigh would regain the lead, outscoring the Lady Cobras 10-8 in the final three innings to even the series.

Alex Johnson was the winning pitcher for the Lady Lions with three strikeouts and five walks.

Raleigh was led at the plate by Sandrea Hord (RBI-2) and Madison Fields (RBI-1) with a double and a single each, Alex Johnson hit a two-RBI double. Hitting safely were Crystal Lofton (RBI-2), Cara McCarty, Emily Graves, and Madison Scott. On defense, Jenna Scott was busy on second base with four outs and one assist.

Amber Brinson suffered the setback on the rubber for Wesson with six strikeouts.

Brinson was also the offensive leader for the Lady Cobras with three singles (RBI-1). Arie Douglas contributed a triple and a single. Harmoni Ashley provided a double and a single. Cheyenne Gladden had a double and two RBIs. Anna Claire Crow hit two singles and had a RBI.

On defense, Shelbi Maxwell led the Lady Cobras in the outfield with three outs at centerfield. Harmoni Ashley had three outs on first base with assists from Amber Brinson, Brooke Jones and Katie McSweyn. Arie Douglas had two outs on second base and Cheyenne Gladden fielded two outs in left field.

Raleigh 9, Wesson 0 

The Lady Lions held the Lady Cobras scoreless in the second game. With the win, Raleigh will advance to the quarterfinals and play Philadelphia.

Sandra Hord pitched the win for Raleigh with one strikeout and three walks.

Defensively, first basemen Anna Carlisle led with 13 outs with assists from third basemen Emily Graves.

Madison Graves was the top hitter for Raleigh with a double, three singles and a RBI. Crystal Lofton provided a solo homerun in the sixth inning to fire up the team and a had a double. Madison Scott hit two doubles and had a RBI.

Laynee Crapps absorbed the setback in the circle for Wesson with two strikeouts. Harmoni Ashley helped defensively with eight stops at first base with assists from Brooke Jones at shortstop. Ashley also got a double play to end the top of the fifth. Anna Claire Crow fielded two outs from right field and Arie Douglas had two outs on second base.

Arie Douglas directed the Lady Cobras’ offense with a double. Catherine Wilson had a single.
