N’West rips Co-Lin in state

SENATOBIA – The Northwest Rangers knocked off the Co-Lin Wolves7-1 for the MACJC State championship Sunday evening at NorthwestCommunity College. Northwest improved to 40-10 with the twowins.

In the semifinals, Co-Lin dumped the nationally ranked No. 1team in the nation Itawamba 13-8 and Northwest eliminated GulfCoast 9-6.

Co-Lin (38-14) will host the NJCAA Division II Region 23Tournament this weekend, May 12-14..

Northwest 7, Itawamba 1

Posting the win was Steven Oelke and Jacob Blakeney(9-1) absorbed the loss. Relieving Blakeney was Doug Atkins in theeighth.

Daniel Mouton doubled and singled for the Wolves. Alsodoubling was Christopher Dunn. Lance Newman and Edison Leecollected a single apiece.

Co-Lin committed six errors in the game, two on thefirst two batters in the first inning. Northwest took a 4-0 lead inthe first inning and Co-Lin scored its one run in the bottom of thefourth to cut the deficit to 4-3. The Rangers tacked on three moreruns in the top of the fifth to hold on and take the statechampionship.

Brandon Kiser drilled a home run forNorthwest.

The Rangers outhit the Wolves 10-5 at theplate.

Co-Lin 13, Itawamba 8

In the first game of the tournament, Itawamba led Co-Lin8-3 until the bottom of the sixth. The Wolves exploded for 10 runsin the bottom of the sixth to take a 13-8 lead and the eventualwin.

Posting the win in relief was Chuckie Stracener (5-1).Starring was Josh Garrett for four innings, Jay Foster took over inthe fifth followed by Stracener in the sixth and Doug Atkins in theninth. The losing hurler was Michael Posey (10-3).

Newman doubled and singled for the Wolves. Dunn doubled.Atkins and Edison Lee collected two hits apiece. Hitting safelywere Nook Logan, Mouton, Britt Hederman, Breck Honea and JoshMcNulty.

The big hitter for Itawamba was Brent Walker with a homerun, a double and a single. Collecting two hits were Chad Case,Brian Hicks and Brent Heavener.
