Intersection solicitation and small roadside advertising signswill be a thing of the past following action Tuesday by the LincolnCounty Board of Supervisors.
At a recessed meeting Tuesday night, supervisors voted toprohibit solicitation by various groups at county roadintersections and to keep advertising and campaign signs off countyroad rights of way.
“We thought it’d be in the best interest of safety,” saidDistrict 4 Supervisor W.D. “Doug” Moak, board president.
Moak said supervisors had concerns about members of variousorganizations trying to raise money at intersections. He mentionedthe possibility of a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle.
Motorist safety was the reason behind the move to outlawadvertising and other signs from county road rights of way.
District 5 Supervisor Gary Walker, board vice-president, saidthe signs can potentially block motorists’ view at intersections, thus increasing the chance for an accident. Also, roadside mowerscould pick up sign support wires and fling them at passingvehicles.
“That’s what we were looking at: signs blocking intersections, safety and things like that,” Walker said.
The state already has a law prohibiting signs along state roadsand highways, Walker said.
Supervisors took the road-related action Tuesday night whilewaiting to hear from the board of aldermen, which was also meeting,on a garbage disposal contract issue. City officials did not actTuesday so the supervisors’ meeting was recessed until Wednesdayafternoon.
