Brookhaven Academy jr. high rips Pine Hills

The host Brookhaven Academy Cougar junior high football teamhanded Pine Hills a 40-12 whipping Thursday night in the seasonopener.

“We looked okay,” said Brookhaven Academy junior high coach RonRushing.”

Brookhaven Academy tacked on three touchdowns in the firstquarter for a 20-6 lead over Pine Hills. John Wayne Havard scored a38-yard touchdown and ran for the two-point conversion for an 8-0lead. Jonathan Watts, who scored three touchdowns on the night,scored his first one on a three-yard run. Cole Hodges followedWatts with an 11-yard carry for a TD. Both pass attempts failed andthe Cougars led Pine Hills 20-0 with time left.

Pine Hills scored its first-quarter TD on a 70-yard kick offreturn by Brady Brakham. They try for two points failed asBrookhaven led Pine Hills 20-6 at the end of the first quarter.

In second-quarter action, Watts scored his second touchdown on arun of 40 yards. Watts followed with a two-point conversion thatpushed Brookhaven’s lead over Pine Hills to 28-6.

Watts recorded his third TD of the night in the third quarter ona burst of three yards. The pass-play failed and the Cougarsincreased their lead to 34-6.

In the final frame, Landon Magee ran for three yards for theCougar’s final TD of the night and the extra point attempt failedas Brookhaven led Pine Hills 40-6.

With time remaining, Brakham returned his second kickoff of thenight for another six points for Pine Hills with Brookhavensecuring the 40-12 victory.

Havard was the leading rusher for the Cougars with six carriesfor 114 yards. Watts took second spot, carrying ten times for 87yards.

Brookhaven quarterback Collins Case completed 3 of 6 passes for42 yards.

Rushing singled out linemen Chris Falvey, Eric Terry, DustyBratton, Heath Whittington, Wade Calcote, Nathan Jones and LandonMagee for playing a good game.

“They did an excellent job,” added Rushing.
