Jackets put 41-0 sting on West Lincoln Bears

A severe thunderstorm, an hour delay, and a muddy field couldn’tkeep the upstart Enterprise Yellow Jackets from stinging the lifeout of the West Lincoln Bears 41-0 Friday night in the seasonopener for both schools.

Directing the mud-slinging rout was juniortailback Shermaine Vaughn who accounted for 203 all-purpose yardsand three touchdowns, including an 82-yard kickoff return.

The game officially kicked off at 8:23 due to an unexpectedsevere thunderstorm. Both the Bears and the Yellow Jackets soughtshelter for nearly an hour.

The Yellow Jackets set the pace early scoring off the openingkickoff from 82 yards on a return by Vaughn. After a Justin Kyzarto Brent Boyd two point conversion connection the Yellow Jacketsled 8-0.

The Yellow Jackets added two more scores in the opening quarteras Boyd reeled off a 15 yard touchdown scamper. Boyd then added atwo pointer making the score 16-0.

After a West Lincoln fumble, Jacket junior Monti Crotwell hitpaydirt from 17 yards out. Vaughn added the deuce for a 24-0lead.

First year Bear coach Don Holston was amazed by the YellowJackets’ speed and physical toughness.

“Enterprise open the gates early,” said Holston. “They’re a veryfast and physical team. They should be one of the top teams in thedivision.”

The second quarter featured more of the same as the YellowJackets produced an early touchdown run by Vaughn. Kyzar took inthe two pointer for an overwhelming 32-0 lead.

After a Boyd sack of Bear punter Blake Howse in the end zone fora safety, the Bears were hit by another shock as backup quarterbackCody Mitchell left the game on a stretcher.

After several Bear runs the Yellow Jackets ended the secondquarter leading 34-0.

The Yellow Jackets added their final score of the night off aKyzar to Vaughn 41-yard end zone connection. Kevin Harris kickedthe extra point and the Yellow Jackets held ground in the fourthquarter to savor a 41-0 victory.

“I was pleased with the effort we gave tonight,” said Enterprisecoach Ricky Deere. “Overall we still need to work on our mistakessuch as penalties and fumbles.”

Leading the Yellow Jackets on offense was Vaughn with sixcarries for 60 yards. Vaughn tallied up 203 all purpose yards. Boydhad 8 carries for 75 yards and Crotwell finished with 63 yards on 5carries.

Howse led the West Lincoln rush with 6 carries for 15 yards.

On defense the Yellow Jackets held the Bears to 20 yardsin total offense. Vaughn and Zack Smith each collected nine tacklesand a fumble recovery. Stuart Britt finished with seven tackles onone sack.

The Bears defense was anchored by Howse with 8 tacklesand two fumble recoveries. Cody Hall chipped in with six tackles,one sack, and a fumble recovery.
