Wesson rushes past N. Pike

SUMMIT – Sophomore runningback Billy Ray Miller rushed 13 timesfor 138 yards and a touchdown to help the Wesson Cobras in a 28-14win over the North Pike Jaguars Friday night in Hurst Stadium.
SUMMIT – Sophomore runningback Billy Ray Miller rushed 13 timesfor 138 yards and a touchdown to help the Wesson Cobras in a 28-14win over the North Pike Jaguars Friday night in Hurst Stadium. Itwas the second straight win for the 2-1 Cobras. North Pike, a Class3A school, fell to 1-1.
“I was real pleased with everyone,” said Wesson head coachRonald Greer. “The offensive line blocked better. Defensively, wedid a good job.”
Miller scored the first touchdown of the game for Wesson in thefirst quarter on a run of four yards. Nick Gunter kicked his firstof four PATs to give the Cobras a 7-0 lead over the Jaguars.
In second-quarter action, Cobra quarterback James Shannoncarried from seven yards out for paydirt and a 14-0 lead going inat halftime.
Wesson posted its third TD of the night on a 19-yard burst byjunior back Marcus Corley to push the Cobras lead to 21-0 over theJaguars.
North Pike answered in the third quarter for six points on a10-yard run by sophomore wingback Kendall Magee. It cut Wesson’slead to 21-6.
The Cobras tacked on one more touchdown in the final frame.sophomore runningback Lorenzo Eason scored from 10 yards out for a28-6 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Brandon Wall scored the final Jaguartouchdown on a run of 10 yards. The run for two points was good asthe Jaguars cut the deficit to 28-14.
“North Pike got after our tails in the second half,” addedGreer.
Wesson rushed the football 50 times for 366 yards. FollowingMiller in rushing were Corley and Emanuel Sinclair with 10 carriesfor 65 yards apiece. Shannon collected 45 yards on 12 rushes.Michael Blue followed with five carries for 21 yards.
Defensively, Miller directed the Cobras with 13 tacklesand recovered a fumble. Seth Easterling finished with nine tackles.Corley and Charles Powell collected eight tackles. Corley alsointercepted a pass and Powell recovered a fumble.
The Cobras fumbled once and had only 15 yards inpenalties on the night.
