Loyd Star entertains N. Pike Jaguars

After suffering losses last week, the Class 3A North PikeJaguars visit the Class 2A Loyd Star Hornets at William E. “Sambo”Smith Field Friday night as both teams attempt to get back into thewin column.

In other local games, the West Lincoln Bears will host the St.Andrew’s Saints junior varsity football team in a Thursday nightspecial beginning at 7 p.m. On Friday night, Enterprise entertainsSt. Joseph and Bogue Chitto is at Puckett.
In area action, Wesson visits Stringer, Bassfield is at LawrenceCounty, Collins travels to Franklin County, McComb entertainsWarren Central, Yazoo County is at Hazlehurst and South Pike is onthe road at Amite County.
Loyd Star was handed a 14-6 upset loss at the hands of Class 1APuckett last Friday. Coach Anthony Hart’s Hornets (2-1) arepreparing for a visit from North Pike (1-1).
North Pike fell to Class 2A Wesson 28-14 last Friday. TheSummit-based Jaguars are under the direction of first-year headcoach Adam Barron, 1985 Bogue Chitto graduate.
“They (NP) have some really good runningbacks,” said first-yearLoyd Star head coach Anthony Hart. “We have to stop the fullback(Clyde Brumfield). He is a good player.
“Defensively, they come after you. North Pike plays harddefense. It’s going to be a tough ball game for us.”
Hart felt the Hornets needed to do two things. “No. 1, hold ontothe football. No. 2, stop their fullback.”
Last year, Loyd Star destroyed North Pike 47-8.
West Lincoln plays a Thursday night special against the visitingjunior varsity of St. Andrew’s. The Bears (1-2) are coming off alopsided 45-6 loss at the hands of Division 7-1A rival BogueChitto.
West Lincoln is under the direction of first-year head coach DonHolston.
Enterprise returns home Friday night to entertain winless Class1A Jackson St. Joseph. The Yellow Jackets (2-1) are coached byRickey Deere.
The Jackets were stunned 35-20 at Sumrall last Friday while St.Joseph (0-3) was shut out 28-0 by Class 2A Hinds AHS.
In last year’s game, Enterprise clipped St. Joe 44-37.
Bogue Chitto broke into the win column last Friday and will tryto post another win when the Bobcats travel to unbeaten PuckettFriday. The Bobcats (1-2) are coached by Carl Cole.
“They (Puckett) are a powerful football team,” explained Cole.”They’ll line up and run at us. They are aggressive on defense.We’ll have to be physical with them and find a way to beat thepressure they are going to bring.”
Puckett is 2-0 on the season.
Bogue Chitto nipped Puckett 18-14 last season.
Wesson hopes to keep its two-game winning streak intactafter a visit to Class 1A Stringer Friday night. The Cobras,coached by Ronald Greer, are 2-1 on the season.
Stringer (2-1) is coached by Bruce Adams and is comingoff a big 18-6 win over Class 2A Morton last Friday.
“They (Stringer) are the most complete football team wewill play,” said Greer. “They are long on tradition down there.They have what it takes to win. Bruce Adams is down there and theydo a fine job. Stringer will be a good measuring stick for us. Itwill take a good ball club to beat them.”
Wesson punched out a 28-6 victory over Stringer in lastseason’s matchup.
Lawrence County was upset by West Jones 19-18 lastFriday and will return home to Monticello Friday night to hostClass 2A Bassfield. The Cougars (1-2) are coached by DannyAdams.
Lawrence County shut out Bassfield 43-0 lastyear.
