Trojans outkick Wolves for 9-3 win

The win was the first of the season for the Trojans who improveto 1-3 before heading into North Division action next Saturdayagainst Coahoma in Clarksdale at 1 p.m. The loss drops the Wolvesto 1-3.
Wright, a sophomore who transferred to Delta this year fromBooneville, hit on field goals of 34, 19, and 28 yards whileCo-Lin’s Matt Powers booted a 22 yarder.
Powers’ field goal, with 14:04 showing in the second quarter,was the first score of the game and was the result of a 10-play, 27yard drive to the Trojans’ five following Co-Lin’s recovery of ablocked Delta punt at the Trojans’ 32.
“We couldn’t put it in the end zone,” said Co-Lin head coachPhil Broome of the loss. “The offensive line is hurt up front. Welost our quarterback. We’re struggling right night.
“Our defense played real well,” continued Broome. “They kept usin the ball game. We had chance at the end to win the ball game. Wehad a good drive going but we had a couple of young mental mistakesthat put us back.” The special teams played real well. JustinSpencer kicked the ball real well.”
Delta returned the favor with 6:18 remaining in the secondquarter with a 34 yard field goal by Wright that capped nine-play,52 yard drive by the Trojans to the Co-Lin 17. The long play of thedrive was a 21 yard pass from Michael Gammel to Berkedius Womack ofRuleville. Gammel, who played all by one set of downs, was 11-19for 127 yards against the Wolves. He didn’t play favorites either,spreading the ball around to seven receivers. Wide receiver DerrickDorsey of Greenville led the team in receptions with three catchesfor 27 yards while wide receiver Terrick Williams of Cleveland hadtwo receptions for 27 yards and wide receiver Tavares Gideon ofGreenwood had two catches for 13 yards. Receivers with one catcheach included Berkedius Womack (21 yards), John Marshall (14),Kendrick Walker (7), and Hiawatha Brown (8).
Following a 3-3 tie at halftime, Mississippi Delta came out andpretty much controlled the second half of play allowing Co-Lin torun only 23 plays and penetrate no deeper than the Delta 13.Following a penalty, which backed Co-Lin out to the 22, and twoincomplete passes, the wolves missed a 38-yard field goal and theironly scoring opportunity of the half.
The Trojans, on the other hand, ran 45 plays in the second halfand kicked two field goals to cement their first win of the season.The first score came at the 8:20 mark in the third quarter after aneight-play, 68 yard drive which included a 74 yard run to theWolves five by Meret McKinnie III of Greenville. The Trojansmanaged just four yards more in three plays and wound up kicking a19-yard field goal to take a 6-3 lead.
The last score of the game came with 4:54 remaining in the thirdquarter when Wright hit a 28-yard field goal to cap a 13-play 55yard drive. The fourth quarter was a defensive battle.
Statistically Mississippi Delta led the game with 215 totalyards (unofficially). The Trojans rushed 39 times for 88 yards andhit 11-20 passes for 127 yards. (McKinnie’s 96 yards were offset by10 negative rushing yards. Hiawatha Brown’s two yards on threecarries brought the total to 88 yards).
Co-Lin rushed 31 times for 85 yards (including 49 negativeyards) and quarterback Corey Chase hit only one pass, out of 13attempts, for 25 yards with one interception for 110 yardstotal.
The Wolves return to the friendly confines of Stone StadiumThursday night to host the Southwest Bears. Kickoff begins at 7p.m.
