BA outscores Oak Forest

AMITE, La. – Brookhaven Academy senior quarterback Jake Sessumspassed for four touchdowns and rushed for another to lead theCougars in a big 37-35 District 4-AA win over the Oak Forest YellowJackets Friday night.

Sessums completed 17 of 26 passes for 257 yards and wasintercepted twice. On the ground, he carried the football 12 timesfor 56 yards.

Brookhaven Academy improved to 1-1 in the division and 5-2 onthe season. Oak Forest fell to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in thedivision.

“It was a shootout,” said Brookhaven Academy head coach DougClanton said. “We had stressed that we had to have that one, if wewant to stay in the hunt. We played a good second half.”

Oak Forest took a 7-0 lead over Brookhaven in the first quarteron a 17-yard run by Craig Fritz. The PAT kick was good.

In the second quarter, Sessums hit Grant Case on an eight-yardtouchdown pass. The run for two points was good and Brookhaven tookan 8-7 lead.

Oak Forest roared back minutes later with an 11-yard pass fromFritz to Dane Mitchell for six points; then followed with atwo-point conversion play to give the Yellow Jackets a 15-8 leadover the Cougars.

Near halftime, Sessums hit Ben Davis on a 17-yard pass-play forthe touchdown but Brookhaven failed on the PAT attempt. The Cougarstrailed 15-14 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Brookhaven scored on a 28-yard pass fromSessums to Case and followed with the two-point conversion for a22-15 lead.

Oak Forest answered with a 37-yard touchdown run by AaronMcDaniel and a PAT kick to tie the game at 22-all.

Both teams scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Brookhaven scored the first TD on Sessums’ 16-yard burst forpaydirt. Sessums threw a three-yard pass to Adam Smith for theother touchdown. The Cougars scored the two-point conversion andBandon Achord made the PAT kick for a 37-22 lead.

Oak Forest scored its next TD on a nine-yard run by DakotaFitzgerald and followed with a five-yard carry by Fritz for thesecond TD. The Jackets kicked their fist PAT but failed on thetwo-point conversion to lose by two points, 37-35, to theCougars.

Dustin King rushed 11 times for 54 yards for Brookhaven. RyanNix carried seven times for 37 yards.

Adam Smith led the Cougar receivers with five catches for 77yards. Case caught four passes for 83 yards. Finishing with 64yards on four catches was Davis.

The Brookhaven defense was led by linebacker JefferyWaycaster, cornerback Will Rushing and linebacker Dustin King withnine tackles apiece. Mathew Wooten and Rushing recovered afumble.

Brookhaven Academy visits Porter’s Chapel at VicksburgFriday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
