BA Jr. High Cougars turn back Oak Forest

It took all four quarters for the junior high Brookhaven AcademyCougars to beat the visiting Oak Forest Yellow Jackets.
It took all four quarters for the junior high Brookhaven AcademyCougars to beat the visiting Oak Forest Yellow Jackets.Powered bythe play of fullback Jonathan Watts, who punched in two of theCougars three touchdowns, BA held on for a 22-20 win.
The Yellow Jackets made an impressive first drive, led byquarterback Tyler Chapmen, who capped the drive with a 30-yardtouchdown burst, giving the Jackets an 8-0 lead. On BA’s firstpossession, Watts led the Cougars to the endzone, and the firstquarter ended in a deadlock at 8-8.
In the second quarter a scrambling Collins Case found ColeHodges for a 25-yard touchdown pass. After missing the two-pointconversion, the Cougars went into the locker room with a 14-8 halftime lead.
With the start of the third quarter, each team went three andout on their first possessions. On the Cougars’ second possessionof the half, running back John Mark Francis sparked a drive on thefirst play from scrimmage with a 16-yard run that set up Watts’second touchdown of the night, a one-yard plunge.
The Cougars finished off the drive with a two-point conversionand held the lead at 22-8. The Jackets stung again, on the ensuingkickoff, when Tyler Chapmen took it 62 yards for the touchdown. OakForest failed on the two-point conversion and BA led 22-14.
In the fourth quarter the Cougars looked as though they wouldcontain the Jackets, but with 24 seconds left on the clock Chapmenhit Frank Drago down the sideline for 50 yards and a touchdown. Ona key two-point conversion effort, Oak Forest came out on an Aceformation (two wide outs, two wingbacks, and one fullback).
Running the option right, the Yellow Jackets were stopped shortby linebacker John Mark Francis. The Cougars held the lead at 22-20with 24 seconds left. The Jackets then recovered an onside kick.Despite a valiant effort by Oak Forest, Francis made another greattackle as time expired and the Cougars held on for a win.
Watts finished the game with 154 yards on 30 carries. Otherrushers for the Cougars were John Wayne Havard, who rushed 13 timesfor 42 yards, and Francis who rushed one time for 16 yards. In theair Case completed one of two passes for 25 yards and atouchdown.
On defense Francis powered the Cougars with 8 tackles, including3 hey tackles late in the game. Other Cougar defenders were Havardwith 5 tackles and a fumble recovery, and Watts with 5 tackles.
For Oak Forest , quarterback Chapmen went 5 for 9 in the airwith 91 yards and rushed it 8 times for 59 yards. Also rushing forthe Yellow Jackets were Brandon Seal who carried it 6 times for 15yards.
The Jackets were led defensively by Gabriel Chapmen with 9tackles. Also making plays on defense for Oak Forest were TylerChapmen with 8 tackles, and Kevin Ensign and Charles Harvey had 4tackles apiece.
The Cougars (4-2) will face off with Bowling Green Academy thisThursday at home, starting at 5:30, for the final game of theseason.
