The City of Brookhaven may be in line for $1 million to build anintermodal transportation center, according to a federaltransportation funding bill currently awaiting final approval inthe U.S. House and Senate.

The money is part of $471 million targeted for the state in a a$58 billion transportation funding bill.
The intermodal operation would include train services, amini-bus system for transporting citizens and possibly fine artsschool students, possible Federal Express service, and parkinggarages to meet expected needs due to the state fine arts school,said Ward 4 Alderman John Roberts during a recent board of aldermenmeeting.
Roberts has been working with architect Michael Barranco onplans for the facility.
During the Sept. 19 board meeting, Mayor Bill Godbold signaledthe city is ready to move quickly should funding becomeavailable.
“If we get a government subsidy, we’ll start on it next year,”Godbold said.
The city is considering building the facility in the area aroundthe old smoke stack near Willard Street.
