BA jr. high wins District 4-AA title

The Brookhaven Academy Cougar junior high football team whippedthe Bowling Green Buccaneers 20-0 to clinch their third District4-AA title in four years.

The Brookhaven Academy Cougar junior high football team whippedthe Bowling Green Buccaneers 20-0 to clinch their third District4-AA title in four years. Coming off a disappointing 2-5 recordlast year, second year head coach Ron Rushing got BrookhavenAcademy back on the winning track with a 5-2 record thisseason.

The Cougars jumped out to an early lead againt Bowling Green. Onthe second play of the game hard-running fullback Jonathan Wattsblasted up the gut on a 56-yard touchdown for the only score of thefirst quarter and the Cougars led 8-0.

The second-quarter started slowly for the Cougars, but Watts hitit up the middle for 25 yards on a key fourth-down play. John WayneHavard went on to score from 16 yards out and put the Cougars up14-0.

After holding the Bucs again, the Cougars made anotherimpressive drive that was capped by a halfback pass from Havard toCole Hodges. Brookhaven extended its lead to 20-0.

The Cougar defense was spectacular in the first half by holdingthe Bucs offense to a minus-13 total yards.

In the second half, the Cougars controlled the pace and held onto the lead. Late in the game, Coach Rushing rewarded the 9th gradelinemen for their hard work over the year, giving each one a chanceat running the ball. Eric Terry gained three yards. Wade Calcoteand Heath Wittington rushed for one yard apiece.

Top rusher for the Cougars was Watts with 11 carries for 95yards. Havard rushed 11 times for 47 yards. Carrying four times for14 yards was John Mark Francis.

Defensively, the Cougars were led by DustyBratton with five tackles and two sacks. John Mark Francis andTerry had four tackles apiece.
