Wolves await Armstead, Gulf Coast

Jason Armstead was a highly recruited wide receiver out of MossPoint two years ago. Last week Armstead was moved to quarterback atMississippi Gulf Coast Community College and the results wereimpressive.

The Co-Lin Wolves (2-6, 1-4) play their final home game Thursdaynight and Armstead brings his talents to Stone Stadium as the GulfCoast Bulldogs (4-4, 3-2) battle for a berth in the state playoffs.Kickoff is 7 p.m. in Stone Stadium.

Co-Lin defensive coordinator Dave Cross said the Bulldogsprovide a number of problems for his unit. “They are very talented.They moved their best athlete (Armstead) to quarterback ), who wasa wide receiver last year.

“Saturday he became a full-time quarterback,” said Cross.Armstead (5-10, 165) rushed for 97 yards and passed for 127 more.He complete 4 of 10 passes. His favorite receiver in lastSaturday’s 36-7 rout of Pearl River was sophomore wideout DougGabriel of Orlando, Fla. Gabriel (6-2, 205) caught 2 TD passes.

“They have a wideout named Gabriel, from Orlando, who isexceptional,” said Cross. He rushed 30 times for 233 yards and 8touchdowns in short yardage in short yardage situations. He caught24 passes for 372 yards and 4 TDs. He also had returned a kickoffand blocked field goal for touchdowns.

Also at wide receiver Ricky Ricks is has caught 28 passes for568 yards and 6 TDs.

Gulf Coast has a massive offensive line, led by Kareem Marshall(6-6, 350) of Grover, N.C., Chris Saucier (6-4, 320) of St. Martinand LaCorey Street (6-7, 325) of George County.

The Bulldogs are under the direction of fifth year head coachSteve Wright. They finished 7-3 last year and 3-3 in the SouthDivision. Wright, a Maryville College graduate, has a career recordof 31-27 at Gulf Coast.

Co-Lin, coached by Phil Broome, has wrestled with a rash ofinjuries this season. Two starting offensive linemen were injuredbefore the season began and all-state sophomore quarterback DenardParks tore an ACL in the second game of the season.

Broome, in his sixth season as Co-Lin’s head coach, is aUniversity of Southern Mississippi graduate. He has a 29-29 careerrecord.

Last week against nationally-ranked No. 5 Hinds, the Wolves fell29-7 during homecoming festivities on the Raymond campus. They werelimited to 9 first downs and 162 yards total offense.

A 2-yard run by freshman tailback Darius Bingham of Fayetteaccounted for Co-Lin’s TD. Bingham had 14 carries for 45 yards.Sophomore tailback Andrew Burks rushed 11 times for 56 yards andfreshman fullback Aaron Yarborough rushed 10 times for 35yards.

Co-Lin quarterback Corey Chase, returning from a 2-gamesuspension for breaking team rules, completed 4 of 15 passes for 49yards. He was intercepted twice.

Wide receiver Odell Bradley who quarterbacked the previous twogames, caught 3 passes for 34 yards.

On defense, Co-Lin allowed just 215 yards total offense,143 of it via the pass. Sophomore linebacker Kamau Jackson led theWolves with 13 tackles, including 10 solo stops. Ken Bournes, JamesSmith and Taquan Starks each had 6 tackles. Sidney Wiley and RickyFunchess intercepted passes.

Wolf Tails: Last year Gulf Coast beat Co-Lin 38-7 atPerkinston. The Bulldogs were 21-14 winners in 1998. The Wolvesdefeated Gulf Coat 20-18 in their 1997 homecominggame.
