Cobras kick St. Andrew’s 33-30 in four OTs

WESSON – Freshman Nick Gunter kicked the game-winning, 27-yardfield goal in the fourth overtime to give the Wesson Cobras a tough33-30 Division 6-2A victory over the St. Andrew’s Saints Fridaynight at Stone Stadium.

Wesson improved to 2-2 in the division and 5-5 on the season.St., Andrew’s, coached by Dan Roach, falls to 2-2 in division playand 5-5 overall.

In overtime, each team was given the football at the 10-yardline and had four downs to score. The team that won the coin tosshad the option of going on offense or defense.

Gunter (5-8, 120) kicked another field goal and three extrapoints for the Cobras in the victory.

“I felt good,” said Gunter about kicking the winning field goal.”We played harder in the second half. Coach (Ronald) Greer led usall the way.”

In the fourth overtime, St. Andrew’s won the coin toss andoptioned to go on offense with the score tied 30-30. Wessonsuccessfully defend four passing attempts by the Saints to set upthe game-winning field goal.

“No. 1, I give praise to the Lord,” said Greer who had beendunked in ice water and sprayed with shaving cream by the playersand cheerleaders after the win. “We give Him all the glory.

“We played our hearts out,” Greer continued. “Ryan Williams dida great job snapping. Peyton Warren was a great holder (forGunter).”

Following a scoreless first quarter, St. Andrew’s marched 85yards and scored at the 11:13 mark in the second quarter on a22-yard field goal by Rashard Johnson for a 3-0 lead.

The Saints tacked on their first touchdown of the game with 2:34left until halftime on a 12-yard pass play from quarterback LeeHall to tight end Robert Smith. Wesson’s Charles Powell blocked theextra point kick by Rashard Johnson and the Saints led the Cobras9-0 at the half.

The Cobras held the Saints scoreless in the second half andgained a deadlock.

Wesson marched 66 yards to score its first TD on a 32-yard runby runningback Emanuel Sinclair. Gunter missed the PAT kick with10:16 left on the clock.

With three minutes left to play in regulation, Gunter nailed a38-yard field goal to tie the game. Both teams took anotherpossession but could not score before time ran out.

In the first overtime, Wesson went on offense and scored on itsfirst play from the 10-yard line on a run by Michael Blue and a16-9 lead. In four plays, Hall hit runningback Sherwood Colette forthe three-yard touchdown and Johnson kicked his second of fourextra points to tie the game at 16-all.

In the second OT, St. Andrew’s won the toss and went on offense.On the first play, Hall connected to Colette for a 10-yard scoreand went up 23-16. The Cobras came back and scored on another10-yard burst by Blue on the first play to deadlock the game at23-all.

In the third overtime, Wesson won the toss, went on offense andscored in four plays on a one-yard burst over the middle by RussellRobinson to put the hosts up 30-23. The Saints answered back on a10-yard pass-play from Hall to Colette that tied the teams at30-30.

Wesson collected 10 first downs and 171 yards on offense.Leading the running game with 14 rushes for 48 yards was Robinson.Carrying seven times for 34 yards was Billy Ray Miller. Picking up35 yards on four carries was Marcus Corley. Jason Shannon rushedfor 28 yards on five carries. Sinclair followed with four rushesfor 26 yards.

Defensively, Miller and Robinson led the Wesson defensewith 15 tackles apiece. Collecting 13 tackles was Sinclair. ChrisThornton and Josh McCormick made 12 stops apiece. Ten tackles weremady by Josh Ashley. Intercepting a pass apiece were Sinclair andRussell.

Wesson visits division foe Hinds AHS (1-4, 1-8) for thefinal game of the season Friday night. Hinds AHS fell to Cathedral46-6 in its last outing.
