Chemical truck causes downtown stink

A chemical used for detecting natural gas stirred a bit of astink Tuesday in the downtown area, officials said.

Brookhaven Fire Department Lt. David Gibson said an Entex truckleaked some of the chemical as it came through town Tuesdayafternoon around 3:30 p.m. The chemical is added to natural gas,which is odorless, so people can know if there is a leak.

“There was no danger to it whatsoever,” Gibson said about theincident.

The strong odor was first reported from Trustmark National Bankand several other reports came in while firefighters were on theirway downtown, Gibson said. Bank and some other downtown businessemployees watched from the sidewalk as firefighters determined thecause of the smell.

An Entex serviceman arrived quickly to get rid of the chemicalspell.

“It turned out to be nothing, but it had everybody concernedthere for a while,” Gibson said.
