Franklin Co. kickerstake 2 from McComb

That’s the phrase used 12 times Tuesday night as the FranklinCounty boys and girls soccer teams prevailed over highly-ratedClass 4A power McComb. The girls won 6-4 in a showdown while theboys bombed the Tigers 6-1. Both teams resume play today at Class5A powerhouse Natchez (1-0). Game time is set for 5:00.

The Lady Dawgs (1-0) took the early 2-1 advantage after seniorAshley Matthews and junior Hilda Harris connected on goal. The LadyTigers (0-1) answered the Franklin score with two goals of theirown taking a 3-2 advantage with 10:58 left to play. After somenifty moves by several Lady Dawg players, senior Amy Newell scoredthe game-tieing goal for the Lady Bulldogs with 8:08 left toplay.

After playing the last eight minutes of the second period out,the Lady Dawgs and Lady Tigers stood at a 3-3 standstill, forcing asudden-death overtime period.

In overtime, the Lady Dawgs got enormous game turning goals fromtheir talented trio in junior Bobbie Ducker and seniors Newell andMatthews. The Tigers’ home goal came off a Ruby Jones sneakkick.

Leading the Lady Dawgs attack were Newell and Matthews with twogoals apiece.

The Lady Tigers were led by sophomore Kelly Clark with twogoals.

In the boys game, the Dawgs got strong goalie work from seniorCole Zumbro en route to the 6-1 smashing of the Tigers. Zumbrocaged the Tigers with eight blocks, allowing just one goal.Zumbro’s backup, Jake Bradford, continued Franklin’s fury, blockingthree Tiger shots on the night.

The Dawgs (100) were led by talented juniors Sony Brown andGardner with two goals each. Bulldog freshman Chris Blackwell alsoproduced a pair.

Tiger senior Matthew Clark scored McComb’s only goal.
