Franklin Co. whips Wesson

MEADVILLE – After four games of error-plagued basketball, theFranklin County Bulldogs finally got their act together Fridaynight as they swept the visiting Wesson Cobras in doubleheaderaction.
The Lady Dawgs (2-3) held the visiting Cobras scoreless for 14minutes, holding a 10-0 advantage after one and a 25-0 lead with2:02 left in the second quarter.
The Lady Cobras (1-2) got their first points from the charityline as senior Kali Baldwin connected on back-to-back free throws.The Lady Dawgs ended the first half of action leading 27-5.
As the second half began the Bulldogs looked to the outside assenior Carletta Brown and Shantae Gills connected on back-to-backthree point baskets. The Lady Dawgs held a commanding 35-18 leadafter three.
The fourth quarter featured a Lady Cobras defensive struggle asBrown terrorized Wesson with steals and layups for the 57-24 LadyDawg victory.
“It feels good to win,” said Lady Dawg head coach Albert Cain.”We played really well on both sides of the ball. We’ve got tocontinued our solid play each and every game.”
Leading Cain’s Dawgs was Brown with 21 points, 8 steals, 6rebounds and 5 assists. Gills chipped in with 14 points, 10rebounds and three steals.
Leading the Lady Cobra attack was Baldwin with eight points andfive rebounds. Caron Brister finished with five points and sevenrebounds.
The Bulldogs (2-3) used Friday night’s Cobra contest as an airshow en route to their 70-41 victory.
The Dawgs started the contest with a new lineup as senior centerMichael Paul Wallace replaced senior Darrell Brown due todiscipline reason. The lineup featured a three guard tandem,highlighted by seniors Kedric Covington, Demetrice Weathersby andLogan (Air) Jones.
The lineup change didn’t hurt the Dawgs as they held a smooth19-9 lead after one quarter of action. Going into the second, theDawgs used several fast break drives to pull away from the Cobras(1-2). The Dawgs ended the first half of play on a Weathersby trey,claiming a 37-14 lead.
After a brief halftime celebration, the Dawgs continued theirhighlight show as Jones treated the Cobras to a huge baseline slam.After several Cobra turnovers, the Bulldogs went back to the air.Weathersby connected with sophomore Anthony Wilcher from 16 feetout for the mid-air dunk.
Leading 50-24 after three quarters of action, the Dawgs lookedto senior point guard Kedric Covington for the finishing touches ashe dazzle the Cobras with numerous crossovers and fakes to savorthe 70-41 Bulldog celebration.
“We played well as a team tonight,” said Bulldog head coachChris Jordan.
The Bulldogs were led by Jones with 16 points and 10 rebounds.Covington chipped in 14 points and four assists. Weathersbyfinished with 12 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists and four steals.Wallace had 10 points and five rebounds. Senior power forward GrantRogers amassed nine rebounds, six points, three blocks and twosteals.
Leading the Cobras was guard Richie Miller with 14 points, 7rebounds and five blocks. Billy Ray Miller finished with 11 pointsand five rebounds. David Smith chipped in with nine points, sevenrebounds, three assists and two blocks.
The Bulldogs resume play Tuesday night on the road againstDivision 6-3A rival North Pike in a non-division game. The Cobrasresume play Monday night hosting Lincoln County rival BogueChitto.
