Brookhaven blows out Brandon Bulldogs in twinbill

The pre-Thanksgiving Day crowd at James A. Sinclair Gymnasiumwas treated to a pair of blowout specials by Brookhaven’s Panthersand Lady Panthers Monday night.

In the opener, the Lady Panthers nearly doubled the Brandon LadyBulldogs 51-26. The Panthers put the ream, steam, and dry-clean onthe Brandon Bulldogs 87-29 in the varsity boys game.

Brookhaven will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 28, to hostLincoln County neighbor West Lincoln. A JV girls game kicks off theevening’s activities at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity girls gameat 6. The varsity boys close out the tripleheader at 7:30.

Brookhaven 51, Brandon 26

The Lady Panthers (4-5) got off to a slow start, eventhough they had a 14-12 lead after one period of play.

Brookhaven senior Nikki Blakely, playing a guardposition on the night, scored 10 of her game-high 20 points in thesecond quarter as the Lady Panthers pulled out to a 26-20 lead atintermission.

Blakely also pulled down 16 rebounds and had 5steals.

Brandon, coached by Linda Deere, watched as her ballclubdid not score a field goal in the second half. Brookhaven outscoredthe Lady Bulldogs 25-6 in the half as Brandon connected on a dismal6-for-18 from the charity stripe during that stretch.

Providing support for Brookhaven head coach Ronald Gilland assistant Terri Hall was Julianna Wallace with 7 rebounds.Shameka Gilmore and Ayana Tillman grabbed 5 reboundsapiece.

Brookhaven 87, Brandon 29

Brookhaven (8-1) jumped on the out-manned visitors fromRankin County to bring home a 58-point victory. The Panthers led25-9 at the end of the first quarter as head coach Preston Wilsonand assistant Dan Presley substituted frequently throughout theevening. All 15 players who dressed played and scored.

Brandon (0-6), coached by Virgil Powe, was missingseveral players from their roster, due to the Bulldog footballteam’s participation in the Class 5A state playoffs. Powe onlydressed six players.

The Panthers entertained advantages of 44-19 at halftimeand 68-23 entering the fourth period.

Center Corey Bryant paced Brookhaven with 11 points.Rayshaun Autman and Dexter Middleton added 10 pointsapiece.

Brandon got 13 points from Bryant May.
