Man gets 2 years in jail for air conditioner theft

A Brookhaven man will be “cooling his heels” behind bars for twoyears after stealing an air conditioner from a funeral home earlierthis year, a circuit court judge ordered Wednesday.
On the day of his scheduled trial, George Wilson Jr., 45, ofChippewa St., pleaded guilty to grand larceny and conspiracy inconnection with the July 16 theft of an air conditioner fromWilliams’ Mortuary.
Copiah County Circuit Judge Lamar Pickard, presiding for JudgeMike Smith this week, ordered Wilson to serve two years of a totalfour-year sentence on the charges. Wilson was also ordered toundergo alcohol and drug treatment and pay court costs and attorneyfees.
“He pled blind. The state had no recommendation,” said AssistantDistrict Attorney Jerry Rushing about Wilson’s sentence.
Since the plea came on the day of the trial, the county’s costof calling in a jury was also included in Wilson’s sentence,Rushing said.
Also Wednesday, during an emotional sentencing hearing, JenniferMcCarty received a three-year sentence after being convicted by ajury Tuesday of possession of less than one-tenth gram ofmethamphetamine.
McCarty, 30, of 780 Hog Chain Road, was also ordered to completean intensive alcohol and drug treatment program, which courtofficials said lasts usually six months to a year. Pickard retainedjurisdiction in the case for one year.
Court officials said Pickard was unable to hear a trial inCopiah County. Therefore, he and Smith switched court sessions forthe week.
