Lawrence Co. boys clip Jefferson

MONTICELLO – The Lawrence County Cougars fought off a 29-pointsecond half rally by the Jefferson County Tigers and held on for an84-77 victory Friday night.

Tim Horton directed the Cougar attack with a 20-point, 11rebound, 4 assist effort.

The Jefferson County Lady Tigers held leads of 12 and 14 pointsduring the girls contest, and fought off a very stubborn LawrenceCounty Lady Cougar squad 60-48.

Lawrence County defeated Jefferson County 70-32 in thepreliminary JV boys game.

Lawrence County travels to Terry, on Tuesday. The JV boys gamebegins at 5:00 p.m., followed by the varsity girls game at 6. Thevarsity boys game is set for 7:30.

The Lady Cougars (4-4), under the direction ofArchie Ross and Lisa Evans, stayed in this contest until the veryend. Lawrence County trailed throughout the evening but thevisitors from Fayette could not put them away.

Jefferson County, coached by Flora McKnight, led 12-8 after oneperiod and 28-21 going into the halftime locker room. The LadyTigers appeared to be pulling away from Lawrence County in theopening moments of the second half, building as much as a 14-pointlead.

Lawrence County made a late quarter surge as Jackie Oatis bankedin a trey as the buzzer sounded to end the third. The Lady Cougarstrailed 42-40 entering the final frame.

That would be as close as Coach Ross’ ballclub would get. LadyCougar Brittany Peyton bagged two 3-point baskets in the period,but Lawrence County eventually ran out of gas.

Tammy Feazelle and Peyton paced the Lady Cougars with 10 pointsapiece.

Jefferson County got a game-high 20 points from TravalynSmith.

The Cougars (7-1) led throughout the entire32-minute affair. Lawrence County, coached by Bobby Lee and EddieRials, jumped out to a commanding 21-6 lead at the end of the firstquarter and led 36-26 at the intermission.

Jefferson County, coached by Marcus Walton, saw his team down byas many as 29 points in the third. After a Tiger timeout with under3 minutes remaining in the period, Walton’s ballclub mounted ascorching rally.

Lawrence County held a 20-point cushion, 65-45 entering thefinal stanza.

The Tigers, with Walton frantically pacing the sidelines, cuttheir deficit to 4 points, 76-72 with 1:26 left in the game on atipin basket by Lonnell Kanach.

Cougar Nick Mikell canned both ends of a one-plus-one to extendthe lead to 78-72 with 1:05 left on the clock. Lawrence County heldon for the 7-point victory, despite a gallant effort by JeffersonCounty.

Lending support for Lawrence County was Mikell with 20 points.Steve Atterberry and Erik Stringer had 3 steals apiece.

The Tigers got 20 points from Delvin Thompson and 19 fromKanach.

In the JV game, 11 points each by Jonathan Eley andBryant Wells carried Lawrence County to victory.
