Howard Phillips
Services for Howard Phillips of Brookhaven are 2 p.m. Monday,Dec. 4, at Brookhaven Funeral Home Chapel with burial in CrystalSprings Cemetery.
Visitation is Monday, Dec. 4, from 8 a.m. until service time atthe funeral home.
Mr. Phillips, 87, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at King’sDaughters Medical Center. He was born in Calhoun County on Feb. 14,1913, to the late Omer Doston and Missouria Irene DentonPhillips.
He was retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and SoilConservation. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where heserved as a deacon and taught Sunday school for a number of years.He was a graduate of Holmes Junior College and Mississippi StateUniversity. He was veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of theSoil Society Club of American and the Noon Lions Club. He was aboard member of Pearl River Basin Development and was a majorinfluence in the development of Lake Lincoln.
Preceding him in death were his parents; first wife, Mary NellMiers Phillips; son, Edward Miers Phillips; three brothers; and asister.
Survivors are his wife, Marguerite Lord Phillips of Brookhaven;daughters, Martha Anne Lewis of Shreveport, La., and Katy Wallaceand Joy McArthur of Tupelo; brother, Jesse Phillips of Oxford;sister, Ruth Pipes of Amarillo, Texas; grandchildren, AmandaKairschner, Allison Tucker, Ashley Wallace, Heath McArthur, JustinMcArthur and Heather Bowen; and great-grandchildren, Andrew Tucker,Emily Tucker and Joyce Danielle McArthur.
Ottsie Sumrall Rutland
Services for Ottsie Sumrall Rutland of Jayess are 1 p.m. Monday,Dec. 4, at Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with burial in ProvidenceBaptist Church Cemetery in Jayess.
Mrs. Rutland, 77, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, of a brain tumor ather residence. She was born in Lawrence County on Oct. 7, 1923, tothe late Homer J. and Corine Schottegen Sumrall.
She was a retired bookkeeper and co-owner of Rutland Cotton Gin.She was a member of Jayess Baptist Church and a lifetime member ofthe Jayess community.
Preceding her in death were her parents and husband, Hubert A.Rutland.
Survivors are her daughter, Susan Gallo of Chalmette, La., andthree grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to a cancer organization, hospice orchurch of the person’s choice.
Jessie Smith
Services for Jessie Smith of Chicago, formerly of Brookhaven,are incomplete. Mr. Smith died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at hisresidence in Chicago. R.E. Tyler Funeral Home is in charge ofarrangements.
