BA girls dump JA; Raiders shoot down BA boys

Senior post player Lindsey Phillips pumped in 10 points to leadthe host Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars to a tough 42-39 win overthe Class AAAA Jackson Academy Lady Raiders Tuesday night. Phillipsalso had 10 rebounds and two steals.

The Jackson Academy girls are ranked No. 3 in the state and BAis No. 2 in a Jackson newspaper poll of private schools.

In the boys game, Jackson Academy had enough firepower to putaway Brookhaven Academy 46-35.

Brookhaven 42, Jackson 39

The Lady Cougars (13-1) went into the second quartercarrying a 10-8 lead over the 9-2 Lady Raiders. Reserve Ancy Myersnailed a field goal with 31 seconds left to give Brookhaven athree-point, 19-16 cushion at halftime.

Brookhaven Academy had a five-point lead, 30-25, as thethird quarter came to a close but Jackson Academy’s CarolynHarthorne nailed a field goal that cut the deficit to three points,30-27, at the buzzer.

In the final frame, both teams scored 12 points but itwas Phillips’ pair of free throws with 13.4 seconds left thatsecured the win.

“They (Jackson Academy) are the most disciplined team inthe state,” said Brookhaven Academy girls coach Barry Grayfollowing the win. “They are the best half-court team in the state.They are one of the best three teams in the state. We need to getto shooting a lot better.”

Senior post player Lindsay Altman netted nine points andgrabbed five rebounds for the Lady Cougars. Amy Smith and KatieNewman finished with seven points apiece. Newman also had fourassists. Smith and Anna K. Gatlin had three assists and made twosteals apiece.

“Brookhaven Academy is very good,” complimented JacksonAcademy girls coach Jan Sojourner. “They’re one of the best teamsin the state. They are hard to beat at home. Their press hurt us.It gave them some free baskets off of that.”

Scoring eight points apiece for the Lady Raiders wereHarthorne and Cameron Vaughn.

Jackson 46, Brookhaven 35

“They (JA) exploited our weaknesses,” said BrookhavenAcademy boys coach Dale Watts following last night’s loss. “They(Raiders) did a great job.”

Brookhaven played Jackson close in the first quarter andkept the deficit to three points, 12-9, as the quarterended.

The Raiders got some quick baskets and pushed theiradvantage to 26-18 when guard Joseph Shayeb nailed a jump beforethe buzzer for halftime.

In the third quarter, Jackson kept its disciplinedoffense and defense intact and built up its lead to 13 points,41-28, going into the fourth quarter. The Cougars outscored theRaiders 7-5 but were unable battle back.

“Jackson Academy did a better job running the floor,”added Watts. “We made some bad decisions. We had some guys playhard. (Jake) Sessums played extremely hard. Turner (Havard) gotafter it hard. A few key players didn’t have a goodnight.”

Sessums paced the 6-4 Cougars with 15 points. Havard andPaul Coker netted nine points apiece. Havard pulled down eightrebounds and made three steals.

The 10-3 Raiders got 13 points from guard John Burns.Eleven points were scored by Matt Neil.

Junior High Games

In the junior high girls game, Brookhaven crushedJackson 39-16. Mallory Logan led the Lady Cougars with 13 points.Collecting six points apiece were Abby Williams and AmberBeeson.

Steffanie House netted eight points for JacksonAcademy.

Jackson thumped Brookhaven 49-36 in the boys game. ThadBurks led the Raiders with 18 points followed by Tyler Winford with16 points.

Scoring 12 points for Brookhaven was Alex Davis. ColeHodges had eight points.

Brookhaven Academy visits Centreville Academy Saturdayfor four games. The first junior high game begins at 1p.m.
