Hornets rip Cobras in division action

Senior Demarcus Barnes pumped in 23 points to direct the hostLoyd Star Hornets to an 89-52 Division 6-2A win over the WessonCobras Thursday night. Barnes also had seven rebounds, seven stealsand four assists.

In the girls game, senior Christie May fired in 26 points andcollected 11 rebounds to pace the Lady Hornets to a 55-38 victoryover the Lady Cobras.

The game was respectable for the first quarter with LoydStar leading Wesson 16-9. In the second quarter, the Hornets pressand Wesson’s turnovers helped the hosts take an 18-point, 40-22,lead at the halftime.

“We didn’t show up tonight,” said Wesson boys coachJimmie Nail. “We stunk it up. Our confidence level is not what itshould be.”

In the third quarter, Loyd Star continued its pressuredefense and continued to pick up some quick points to go into thefinal frame up 69-36.

Loyd Star improved to 3-3 on the season and 2-1 indivision play. Wesson fell to 2-1 in the division and 3-5overall.

“I thought we did played real good,” said Loyd Star boyscoach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “Our subs did a good job coming off thebench. Our press confused them. We got a lot ofturnovers.”

Contributing to the Loyd Star win with 18 points wasBrad Britt. Seth Britt collected 13 points, seven rebounds, sevenassists and three steals. Finishing with 10 points was Jared Britt.Tyrone Tyler grabbed seven rebounds and Josh Britt had sixrebounds.

Wesson got 13 points from Richie Miller. Billy RayMiller netted 12 points followed by Roderick Clay with 10points.

Loyd Star 55, Wesson 38

The Wesson girls came out on target in the first quarter to takea 16-16 lead over Loyd Star. The Lady Hornets began making theirshots and came back to take a two-point, 23-21, lead over the LadyCobras at halftime.

In the third quarter, Loyd Star continued to score and reboundto push its lead to 37-29 going into the final frame. The LadyHornets went on to outscore the Lady Cobras 18-9 to secure thedivision win.

The Loyd Star girls improved their division record to 3-0 andare 4-2 overall. The Lady Cobras fell to 2-6 on the season and 1-2in division action.

“Christie May picked it up in the second half,” said Loyd Stargirls coach Lori Britt. “everybody stepped it up defensively in thesecond half.”

Adding support to the Lady Hornets win with nine points and fiverebounds was Dana Coke. Monica Townsend collected five rebounds,four assists and a steal.

Maggie Johnson sparked the Lady Cobras with 12 points. Scoring10 points was Jessica Phillips followed by Anna Johnson with sixpoints.

“We played as good as we have all year in the first half,” saidWesson girls coach Lane Young. “Loyd Star picked it up on defense.We didn’t handle the basketball very good.”

Junior High

In the boys game, Loyd Star pounded Wesson 59-29. BlakePickett was the top scorer with 14 points. Josh Townsend followedwith 13 points and Wade Wilson finished with 11points.

In the girls contest. the Lady Hornets dusted the LadyCobras 33-7. Brittany Henderson led Loyd Star with 12 points.Jordan Britt followed with eight points.
