Brook Academy pounds Parklane

MCCOMB – Brookhaven Academy handed Parklane Academy a pair oflopsided basketbal losses Tuesday night.

The Lady Cougars used a dominating full-court press to down theLady Pioneers 72-54 while their counterparts out muscled Parklane77-62.

The Lady Cougars (15-1) needed a half court shot from Amy Smithat the end of the first quarter to jump-start their offense.

“Parklane dictated the first two minutes of the game,” said LadyCougar head coach Barry Gray. “It seemed like when Amy (Smith) hitthat shot at the buzzer it got us going.

“There was one stretch where I thought we played our bestbasketball of the season,” Gray noted. “We rebounded the ballbetter and didn’t make but seven turnovers in the first half.”

Brookhaven Academy broke open a 24-20 second quarter lead with a12-0 run to take a 39-26 halftime lead. Their relentless press andup-tempo game eventually stretched that lead to 60-36 at the end ofthe third quarter.

Smith led four Lady Cougars in double figures with 19 points andfour 3-pointers. Katie Newman scored 14 points, had 6 steals, 6assists and pulled down 5 rebounds. Lindsey Altman was good for 12points and 8 rebounds. Anna L. Gatlin chipped in 10 points and 6rebounds.

The Cougars (8-4) opened up an early 18-8 first quarter lead enroute to their win.

Turner Havard scored 23 points and Paul Coker added 21 pointsand 11 rebounds to lead Brookhaven Academy.

“Our boys really stepped it up against Parklane,” saidBrookhaven Academy boys coach Dale Watts. “Paul Coker had a realsolid game for us.”

The Cougars used a combination of quickness and an impressiveinside game to open up a 70-40 third quarter lead Coach Wattsemptied his bench.

Jeremy Brumfield led Parklane with 20 points.

In junior high action, both Brookhaven Academy squads postedwins.

The girls downed the Parklane JV 36-24 behind Kelli Byrd andLauren Smith with 10 points each. Emily Spence and Carolyne Haskinsscored eight points to lead Parklane.

The boys prevailed 42-33 behind Jonathan Winborne’s 13 points.Benton Turnage lead Parklane with 10 points.

The Cougars return to action this weekend as they host OakForest Academy Friday night and Wilkinson Christian Saturdaynight.
