Wolves, Lady Wolves overpower Delgado

WESSON – The Co-Lin Wolves and Lady Wolves had little difficultyin pounding out a pair of wins over the Delgado Dolphins Tuesdaynight at Mullen Gymnasium in the final games before the ChristmasHolidays.

In the men’s game, sophomore guard Barry Whitley’s 27 pointspowered the 8-2 Wolves to a 104-80 win over the Dolphins.

Freshman forward Mindy Livaudais directed the 10-0 Co-Lin womenwith 18 points in their 101-48 victory over the Lady Dolphins.

Co-Lin 104, Delgado 80

The Wolves opened the first minutes of the game with aquick 11-2 lead. The Dolphins closed the deficit to one pointseveral times as the Wolves began pulling away with five minutesleft in the first half. A jumper by Brannon Barfield gave Co-Lin a10-point, 41-31 edge with 3:36 left. A four-point play from Whitelyextended Co-Lin’s advantage to 47-33 with 2:22 remaining. At thehalf, Co-Lin led Delgado 53-37.

“We got some people that had started to play better,”said Co-Lin men’s coach Dennis Sims following the win. “We had moreconsistent help from our bench.”

Delgado made their best run in the second half in theopening minutes. The Dolphins cut the Wolves 16-point, halftimelead to 11 points, 71-62. Sophomore guard Rod Haynes came off thebench near the 11-minute mark to give the Wolves a needed spark.With 9:01 left to play, Co-Lin had pushed its lead to 16-points,78-62. Haynes finished the game with five points.

Co-Lin hit 99 points on a free throw from freshmancenter Quentin Christian with 56 seconds left to play. Freshmanforward Brannon Barfield drove the length of the the court for aone-handed dunk to give Co-Lin its final 101-80 win.

“Offensively, we are shooting the ball a lot better,”added Sims.

Following Whitley in scoring for the Wolves was BrandonDickerson with 17 points. Barfield netted 16 points and pulled downeight rebounds. Christian finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds.Whitley also had eight assists.

For Delgado, Jermaine LeGrange led with 14 points, allin the first half. Chris Deville followed with 10points.

Co-Lin 101, Delgado 48

The Co-Lin women shot exceptionally well fromthree-point range, netting nine treys in the first half as the LadyWolves held a 50-27 edge over the Lady Dolphins. Sophomore guardRusti Smith led with three-3-pointers followed by sophomore guardChristi Wallace with two. Scoring one apiece in the first half wereGwen Smith, Melanie Fairchild, Vanessa Andrews and Shanequa Dennie.Rusti Smith nailed her final three pointer of the game at thehalftime buzzer.

“Everybody got to play,” said Co-Lin women’s coach GwynYoung. “We substituted early in the game. We shot the ball reallywell early in the game. It opened it up for everythingelse.”

In the second half, play got sloppy as both Delgadospent a lot of time fouling Co-Lin. Christy Brown’s field goalbrought the score to 99-43 with less than a minute left. AlexyaIrvin scored her two points of the game to give the Lady Wolves a101-46 win.

From the charity line, Co-Lin netted 32 of 44 freebiesand Delgado made 7 of 9.

Adding support to the Lady Wolves win with 13 points wasGwen Smith. Brown fired in 11 points. Livaudais led off thebackboards with 10 rebounds and blocked two shots. Andrewscollected six rebounds. Sheritha Simmons led with four assists andRusti Smith made three steals.

Forward Stephanie Roniger led Delgado with ninepoints.
