BA sweeps WCCA Rams

The Wilkinson County Christian Academy Rams came into Cougar gymundefeated Saturday night, but left with two lop-sided losses.

In the varsity girls game, senior forward Lindsey Phillips andsenior guard Amy Smith pumped in 12 points apiece to lead theBrookhaven Academy girls to a 61-30 District 4-AA win overWCCA.

In the boys contest, senior power forward Turner Harvard scored24 points on 12 of 14 shooting to dust the Rams 74-33.

Brookhaven Acad. 61, Wilkinson 30

The girls contest was a battle between Brookhaven coach BarryGray and older brother Coach Ricky Gray of WCCA.

The Lady Cougars (17-1, 3-0) blasted the visiting Rams from thestart with multiple layups and tipins by Phillips for the 18-11first quarter lead.

In the second quarter the Lady Cougars went to senior tandemKatie Newman and Amy Smith for back to back treys and layups, enroute to the 34-14 halftime lead.

The second half featured even more aggressive defense by theLady Cougars as Newman and sophomore guard Anna K. Gatlin rippedthe Lady Rams with quick steals and assists to cap off the 61-30victory.

“We had a good effort on defense tonight,” said Lady Cougarcoach Barry Gray.

Gray’s brother, Ricky, was impressed by how fast and quick theLady Cougars changed the pace of the game.

“They made us play their style,” said Gray. “Their defenseforced us into mistakes and turnovers. They showed tonight, whythey are one of the best teams in the state.”

Phillips led the Lady Cougar attack with 12 points and 10rebounds. Smith finished with 12 points, six assists, and threesteals. Newman chipped in with 10 points, five rebounds, foursteals, and three assists. Anna K. Gatlin made five steals and hadsix assists. Lindsay Altman had seven points, seven rebounds, foursteals, and two assists.

Jennifer Tolbert led WCCA with 11 points and seven rebounds.Emily Lewis collected six points on four rebounds.

The Cougars (10-4, 2-0) had the Rams number from the start,collecting a 21-5 first period lead.

In the second frame, Cougar junior Ben Davis terrorized the Rams(9-1, 0-1) with numerous rebounds and assists, giving the Cougarsan 38-13 halftime advantage.

The second half was basically a learning period as Cougar coachDale Watts substituted his younger reserves. One Cougar reserve,Craig Smith, made the most of the playing time by shaking the Ramswith numerous treys, including a 40 foot, fourth-quarterbuzzer-beater, to highlight the Cougars 74-33 trouncing of theRams.

“I was pleased with the way we played,” said Cougar coach DaleWatts. “Our defense really picked it up tonight. We got the ballout quickly, due to the fast break.

Helping the Cougars in the win was senior guard Jake Sessumswith 14 points and four assists. Smith collected nine points andthree steals.

Leading the Rams was Adam Corrette with eight points and sevenrebounds. Brandon Cavin chipped in with eight points and threerebounds.

In the junior high girls game, Brookhaven crushed WCCA 50-17.Jessie Altman paced the Lady Cougars with 10 points. Nine pointswere netted by Lauren Smith followed by Allyson Pickett with sevenpoints.

WCCA got nine points from Elizabeth Whetstone.
