Public service workers scrambled to repair damage caused by highwinds throughout Lincoln County and surrounding areas Saturdayafternoon and evening.

Downed powerlines and trees caused power outages beginningaround 3:30 p.m.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol reported approximately 40 treesdown in the county, and some were found on roadways. Tree damagewas widespread, according to Dispatcher Royce Renfroe.

Renfroe also reported weather may have contributed to fiveaccidents in the county Saturday. There were two injuries in theaccidents, but neither was critical.

The Lincoln County Jail also lost power about 3:30 p.m.,according to Dispatcher Mike Smith. The generator switched onimmediately, he said, and jail operations were not severelydisturbed by the outage.

In the city, things remained relatively quiet, but there weresome minor power outages.

The Brookhaven Fire Department responded to a downed powerlineat a residence at 551 West Monticello Street about 2:30 p.m. Whilefirefighters were inspecting the line, power company personnelarrived to repair it.

The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office also reported tree andpowerline damage throughout that county. Reports of damage therebegan arriving around 3:49 p.m.

In Wesson, downed powerlines began to cause outages beginningaround 1:30 p.m. Damage there was both rural and in the town,according to Officer Chris Higgenbotham of the Wesson PoliceDepartment.

Damage to some minor functions of the Wesson water system maycause a decrease in water pressure in some areas, Higgenbothamsaid.
